Now-former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was stripped of his gavel on Tuesday afternoon via roll-call vote on Rep. Matt Gaetz's (R-FL) motion to vacate the chair, pursuant to rules agreed to by McCarthy in order to clinch victory in his drawn-out race to become speaker in January.
By a vote of 216 to 210, the historic motion prevailed as presiding Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR) declared "the resolution is adopted...the office of Speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant."
The Republicans joining Gaetz in his motion to vacate were Reps. Biggs (AZ), Buck (CO), Burchett (TN), Crane (AZ), Good (VA), Mace (SC), Rosendale (MT

As usual, what were the alternatives? What back room deals were in place. Trump thought there was more to be gained than lost by supporting Kevin. We have no idea what went into that calculus.
If that’s what Trump thought, I presume Gaetz was right with what he did.
Name one accomplishment besides being black. (and 2 arrests)
Donalds voted to KEEP McCrappy as speaker; I say no to Donalds
‘No shame what so ever.’
what’s really shameful are those who consider the free exchange of opinion on an open forum to be a shame...
Of course not. But to be realistic, they’ll have to pick someone who can win the vote. There are any number of honest people, even a few in Congress. Will they pick someone honest? I hope so. Lord have mercy on us.
I stand corrected, the link I posted was for the motion to table, not the final vote to vacate the speakership.
As you said, the Dems + 8 Republicans vacated the speakership, but McCarthy still needs to go.
The only reason the Republicans voted to keep McCarthy is because they are cowards and grifters who want to spend as much as the dems, but without leaving any evidence of their complicity.
Likely because no one wants the job.
Being SOH of a nearly evenly split House means you please no one.
Reminds me of a line from this “Good Omens” show... a lady is runing a coffee shop named “Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death”, and an angel visits the shop, and asks her: “does anyone ever choose death?”
McCarthy was the last of the “Young Guns”—remember them?
Ryan and Cantor were already detonated.
Still, far too many Freepers can’t believe how the Establishment/Deep State wraps their bitter pills in a MAGA/conservative coating so they go down smoothly with the base.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) Florida.
“I don’t feel pressure from conservatives or Democrats. I feel the judgment of history. I worry that when the history books are written about this country going down, my name is going to be on the Board of Directors here.
If this country is going down, I am going down fighting. I don’t care if that means fighting Republicans, Democrats, the uniparty, House leadership, the PACs, or the lobbyists.
I’ve had it.”
You mad Bro?
The speaker pro tempore is limited.
Luckily, he was not in office when the pledged his fealty to Nancy Pelosi.
I think Matt Gaetz was right. I believe in accountability and consequences. Without those there is no path forward.
There may be some chaos but at least there is a standard established and enforced, fear & trembling in the uni-party and the opportunity to find a better speaker.
They’re fleeing the consequences not the reasons.
In my opinion way to many members of the house are ‘Me Too’ members that do exactly what the party leadership tell them to do.
“thing is the uninformed, clueless and fence walkers will swallow whatever the media spews”
Which they would have anyway. The media never planned to say anything good about Republicans even if McCarthy stayed on as speaker. So nothing has changed in that regard.
