If one wants to keep more distance between them and the perp, a pepper ball and rubber projectile gun may help.

The shooter remains in jail. With the remaining charge, if not thrown out, he faces 10 years behind bars.

I’ve seen such projectile guns. But I am wary of them. They are bright orange, but a excitable cop or armed citizen might just think gun instead of orange gun.
I like Fox pepper spray. Quality stuff. Easy to carry. Can’t be mistaken for something else.
But as the old saying goes, to each his own.
