New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, known for his close ties to US President Joe Biden, published an op-ed on Saturday following Biden’s meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York this past week.
Friedman asserted that, while appearing friendly toward Netanyahu, the President had "privately slip[ped] a homework assignment into Bibi's pocket."
This assignment, according to Friedman, was for Netanyahu to decide whether to dismantle his coalition, or miss out on the chance to achieve normalization with Saudi Arabia.
“It was a master class in how a US president puts a fateful decision to an Israeli leader — one that poses to that Israeli leader the most excruciating challenge of his political career. That is: either blow up the extremist cabinet you’ve built to keep yourself out of jail — and replace it with a national unity coalition — or blow up the chance for peace with Saudi Arabia, which could pave the way for Israel’s acceptance across the whole Muslim world,” wrote Friedman.
Among the conditions Netanyahu would have accept in exchange for normalization with Saudi Arabia, as outlined in the article, would be curbing Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria, improving living and travel conditions for Palestinian Arabs there, advancing Palestinian Arab administration over more of their populated areas in accordance with the Oslo Accords and in essence agreeing to steps on the ground that preserve the option of a two-state solution.
Earlier this month, Friedman wrote a column which he urged the US and Saudi Arabia not to go through with a deal to normalize Saudi-Israeli relations, claiming that Netanyahu’s government “is not normal”.

There will be Peace in the middle east when it’s one sheet of glass
There will not be peace in the middle east until the Prince of Peace returns.
Hold yet one more election, roll the dice. All for the sake of “Peace” with KSA. There’s commerce between Israel and KSA. There’s no fighting. They’ll fund terrorism regardless. But let’s give the PA control over Highway 60! So there’ll be “peace” with KSA. No brainer, that.
Netanyahu looking to stab his supporters in the back. Not for the first time.

This is what Biden wants. What does the KSA want? I’d negotiate directly with the KSA and ignore Biden.
I’m sure BiBi had some choice words to say about “Joe” after this charade.
FRIEDMAN!!!!! LMAO!
The author of 100 Books NO ONE has ever read.
“Master Class” from a senile old man. Good heavens! WHO believes this CRAP?
Only if he’s going to disappear in the middle of the night. This is one too far.
And then Biden mumbled something, crapped his Depends and shuffled off looking for a kid to fondle.
It was a master class in how a US president puts a fateful decision to an Israeli leaderDidn't this guy get a Nobel for ass-sniffing?
Bibi to mashed potato brains...”GFY”.
This!!
LOL. He gets points for trying though.
My Gawd, what an absolutely arrogant putz, this Friedman. I give him credit for bringing the exercise of putzacity to its highest metaphysical level.
“..Friedman, known for his close ties to US President Joe Biden...”
What, lashed together in a rough-hewn manner? Biden, on the wrong side of every foreign policy action for fifty plus years?
The US and its so-called intel community needs to stop thinking of itself as the most dominant and influential player on the world stage. Friedman has zero power nor insight nor even intelligence to understand, much less dictate the dynamics of the MidEast. Oh, the US can unquestionably step into any pile of international dogs**t and spread it around more than it already is, that’s a proven fact.
The Saudis and half a dozen other countries are just taking advantage of the US tragically having a mental defect in charge. They know their enemy is not Israel, but Iran. And neither Biden nor Friedman nor any perverse little tryst of those two has any ability to influence MidEast events other than to foul them up more than they already are. Israel knows well that Biden is no friend of theirs, hell, Biden already gave them an extra $30/bbl in oil, soon to be $50. Friedman has no insight into Israeli affairs they do not already have. He’s just a snotnose prick who some used to consider important for reasons unknown.
Netanyahu the first world leader to congratulate Biden on his big victory, right on Wednesday morning.
I doubt it all. The US no longer has its former leverage in the Middle East. The Israeli-Saudi deal, if it goes through, will be brokered by the Chinese, not the Americans. Friedman has had delusions of grandeur before, imagining breakthrough conversations with the Saudis, eg. I suspect Biden told him a whopper and he believed it because reporting it makes him look like an insider.
Who would have thought.
Tough choice. A deal with the Biden white house or freedom.
Oh, the irony!
