“Swing at a cop. “
I doubt he did.
“This is a classic example of brainless, nonsensical abuse of authority and selective enforcement resulting in a case of “do what I say NOW!”
This is exactly what it is. A twisted mental power trip.
Best I can tell race had nothing to do with this…. But that willl be thr narrative anyway
It is not just a black school tradition. Many bands, at many schools, play in the stands after the game. I think the poster above got it right: a low-level cop wanted to throw some authority around.
I’m white. I’m from Auburn, ALABAMA. I’ve played in the band since 7th grade and even now, married to a daddgum band director. We played in the stands after games at Auburn High School 1969 - 1972. We played in the stands after games at college football games, AUMB 1972 - 1976. My hubs bands played after games. Nobody ever asks us to quit.
This was not the band director’s fault.
Yes, it is. You get in the face of a band director and they will tell anybody to pound sand - but it better be in rythmn.
I remember an out-of-town game and there wasn't any place for our busses to park. So, the director decided we'd pull up next to the stadium, discharge players and instruments and then the busses would go find some place to park. As we started to discharge a cop came up and told the director we'd have to leave. The director said, sure, one we're unloaded. The cop said, "no, NOW or I'll impound these busses." The director replied, "There are 250 college students on these busses. Go ahead and impound them!"
That ended that. We got off played the game and afterward and then went home. Fun times.

Absolutely, we did it after games. And there was only two black families who lived in our town at the time. This is a music tradition and HARMLESS.
The bands get to battle too. It is their turn for team competition.
Many variables involved. The game was over. The field workers of the home team were wanting to turn out the lights, while the band director of the visiting team was staying and playing after the other band was done (the “battle of the bands” was over). It’s the equivalent of someone not leaving your property after being told to. And, frankly, not much good happens late on Friday night in the dark when a bunch of young people are together, as evidenced by the fact that there had already been violence this year at other high school games in the area.
Most of the problem in places like Chicago migrated from places like Birmingham.
Bonhoeffer was eventually hung for conspiracy to commit murder.
If you plan to confront the State, have a worthy cause, not just an attitude.
“The incident occurred at P.D. Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham during “fifth quarter” – a tradition that originates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities where school bands face off, taking turns to play music after a football game comes to an end.
“It is a big cultural thing that happens amongst bands. Something that everybody looks forward to,” Mims said.
“A large proportion of our fans come just to see the bands and so it’s something that’s not uncustomary,” he added.”
Another made up tradition of which you never heard - the fifth quarter - like Kwanzaa.
Even if all of that is true it never ends well when you shove a police officer.
The cops should have let the bands finish instead of escalating the encounter and acting like thugs. This is still a free society, barely.
IMHO it was one of those, just walk away, leave them alone, and it’ll take care of itself. While playing their song the lights went out, everyone else was almost gone. It seemed to be more of a defiance toward cops for just ordering the band director what to do.
If the cops had just walked away this would have deescalated on its own. Their ego’s wouldn’t let them.
Once they went hands on the director should also have backed down. This also escalated things....but the primary cause, imo, was just not leaving them alone. They’re a band playing music, that is all. They would have left if they cops just vacated. What are they going to do? Play to a dark empty stadium all night?
Just unnecessary.
Lolzzzzz.... Odds are the bros tazed him. The black police officers, due to Birmingham being 80% black. 80% is my guess. Morer whites in the burbs.
You would think that he has enough money to get his nose fixed and not have to sit at a quartering angle to the camera.
Most of my family were in Drum & Bugle Corps (DCA and DCI) and I’ve been to many shows. It’s long been a tradition that after the end of the show to perform mini concerts/encores in the parking lot before packing up and boarding their buses.
I’d never seen this as being a problem anywhere except for a show in the Hershey (PA) Stadium where the Hershey security guards and rent-a-cops threatened to have everyone arrested - the corps, the directors and the fans.

He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. No mention of a “noise ordinance.” Where did you get that from?
“Battle of the bands” became a battle of the egos.
They probably clear the stadium to reduce the chances that teens get into a mass brawl or shootout.
Yes, this. Lots of old folks from Honkeytown reminiscing on this thread.
