U.S. military officials are searching for a missing F-35 jet after a "mishap" caused its pilot to eject on Sunday afternoon.

Joint Base Charleston said on Facebook that the aircraft was a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II belonging to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. The pilot ejected safely and was transported to a local medical center.

The base is working with Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort to help locate the missing aircraft. Emergency response teams have been deployed to find the jet.

"Based on the jet’s last-known position and in coordination with the FAA, we are focusing our attention north of JB Charleston, around Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion," Joint Base Charleston said in a statement on Facebook.

"The public is asked to cooperate with military and civilian authorities as the effort continues," the base added.

Anyone with information about the jet's whereabouts is urged to contact JB Charleston Base Defense Operations Center at 843-963-3600.

You’re not wrong. For the moment. I think they’ll find it. If, for example, it went into Lake Moultrie, the wreckage area wouldn’t be apparent.

And again, historically, there have been a number of military aircraft lost, even in peace time, and never, even to this day, found.

And there was, of course, that Malaysian Airlines flight to China, flight MH370, which had 239 people on board, that disappeared and has never been found.

Whether that makes the US Military incompetent is debatable. I have thought numerous times, over my long career, that they were!

I have certainly seen some crazy stuff! Consider the word FUBAR is a US military acronym, after all.

"Do the CCP own the land where the plane “landed”?"

No, but lucky for us a Chinese fishing trawler was just off shore. They have "joined" in on the search.

Lucky for us that they were in the area after delivering pallets of cash to the Biden family.

The Aviationist says:
An F-35B Lighting II jet belonging to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 (VMFAT-501) with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based at MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station) Beaufort, South Carolina, has crashed on Sunday Sept. 18, 2023.

From the civilian side, I was fortunate to be involved in the roll-out of the training program for the Air Force variant of this Aircraft. For the Marine Corp and Navy to have to request public help for one lost in a mishap like this is the height of humiliation.

Lot of swamp land around in that area. Had a couple of craft ‘disappear’ after crashing when I was at MCAS Beaufort. Which is actually Parris Island.

I have recently complained that the South Carolina highways are poorly maintained but this variant lands on a dime. My wife wants the picture of Luke’s X-Wing levitating out of the swamp.

Just so long as he stays within the velvet ropes it should not be a problem since he works for Hunter.

Correct. However, if you inject the canopy goes away, what should change the radar signature of the plane, making it easier to spot, at least, in my opinion.
