Republican Texas AG Ken Paxton is acquitted of 16 corruption charges at impeachment trial

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was acquitted Saturday of all charges at a historic impeachment trial that divided Republicans over whether to remove a powerful defender of former President Donald Trump after years of scandal and criminal charges.

The verdict reaffirmed Paxton’s durability in America’s biggest red state and is a broader victory for Texas’ hard right after an extraordinary trial that put on display fractures within the GOP nationally heading into the 2024 elections. In the end, Paxton was fully cleared by Senate Republicans, who serve alongside his wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton.

Angela Paxton was not allowed to vote. But she attended all two weeks of the trial, including the reading of the verdict, when all but two of her fellow 18 Republican senators consistently voted to acquit her husband on 16 impeachment articles that accused him of misconduct, bribery and corruption.

So all GOP but one voted to acquit, and all Rats voted not to acquit. Typical, and it’s past time to vote out Nichols as well as the GOPe in the House who voted to impeach.

Thanks. I was confused.

What is most disconcerting to me is that my representative, Ellen Troxclair voted ‘yes.’
This is her first term in office. I guess I’m gonna have to re-evaluate my vote next time around.

Yes I can imagine it. Would have been the exact same thing Bush did. Have you not been paying attention? Stupid drawn out operations in Iraq and Afghanistan with both. Increased surveillance and police powers over US citizens. TSA, Homeland Security Department etc. with both.

Exactly the same.

You can bet that the DoJ will speed up their planned indictment against Paxton now that Texas has acquitted him.

Paxton should counter sue for punitive damages and start criminal conspiracy investigations. If the Bushes get burned then that is just WAY TOO BAD.

Speaker of the House Dale Phelan is responsible, but so are the 59 other Texas Republican House of Representative members who voted to impeach. The House has killed many pro-family and economic freedom initiatives due to the Democrat-RINO coalition that has run that body for a long time. Phelan and the other 59 need to be defeated in the Republican primaries.

Compare the Bush era v. the Obama era, which continues today.

Those who voted only saw what was projected by the snakes running the Kangaroo Court.

Nope. No sale. You know it's a kangaroo court and you go along with it. Maybe that's the standard for a liquored up good 'ol boy, but it's not the standard for someone elected to public office. All of them need to hang.

“Here’s a scary thought, given what’s happened to the country in the past 15 years. Would electing Hillary in 2008 been worse than Obama was and continues to be through his minions?”

Hillary is evil but Obama is the devil himself.

Wallace T listed members of the Texas House when it was the Texas Senate who voted.

It was the house that voted to impeach and created the need for the Senate Trial. It was the Senate that voted to acquit.

I think it said two so-called republicans/s voted to convict. There should be a national level of effort to primary them gone next chance.

Yes. They will try.

Am thinking that if President Trump wins, he might select Paxton to be US AG. If so he will be thinking just like President Trump.

Clean the Chicken Coop.

There it is again - the hard right, the depolarables, those who are so hard core they oppose the judgment of the drunk on their ass good 'ol boys in the state legislature.
