Haiti achieved independence in 1804 so yes they were the first black republic. Too bad they degenerated into chaos.
And Haiti too was the first country in the world to prohibit slavery. Haiti's one bright moment was its military victory against Napolean and it's been a downward spiral ever since.

Haiti has been independent for almost as long as we have.True. So they should have a thriving tourist industry with cruise ships docking at Port-au-Prince.
To: All
Gee, I can think of a few other countries that should do the same thing.
To: Drew68
Haiti didn’t formally make rape illegal until 2005.

“yet another demonstration of how the world is failing and abandoning the Haitian people“
The only thing failing the Haitian people is the Haitian people.

“Haiti’s one bright moment was its military victory against Napoleon...”
Which is what motivated Napoleon to sell Louisiana to us.

They didn’t beat Napoleon. It was more like Napoleon cutting his losses because he had his hands full with Europe. If France really wanted to, they could have crushed the slave rebellion.

I would not worry too much. Tourists are generally well protected all over.

Haiti had a bad history too.
The French were brutal slave owners. The slave uprising was brutal back.
Then Napoleon invaded and tried to re install slavery.
The French hit Haiti with a huge bill for leaving, which Haiti paid off only in the 1990s.
Then the Haitians started screwing themselves, with coups, violence and de deforestation.

They didn’t beat Napoleon.
Napolean sent 30,000 soldiers to Haiti and that army was defeated. The Haitians sure as hell beat Napolean. And it was a terrible defeat for the French. They would soon lose their entire foothold on the American continent.

Good for the DR.
We need to follow suit for the same reasons.

So Haitians are morons and Dominicans are merely dim-witted.

Dominican MLB greats: Juan Marichal, Vladimir Guerrero, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Albert Pujols...and on and on.
Haitian MLB greats: (sorry, there has never been a major league player from Haiti)
To: thegagline
This is describing what will soon happen around every major city in the USA.
