That lesson was hammered home by my CO and Battalion Commander after I failed my first ARTEP 46 years ago. Nobody’s perfect, but it has served me well over the years. It was a great learning experience, flunking that evaluation. I learned what I could do, and what I couldn’t do.
I think that’s a big problem in today’s military: you’ve got to give the butterbars the freedom to learn their jobs. That doesn’t happen overnight.
