That volcano in the South Pacific put about a years worth of water vapor into the atmosphere. Water vapor is a green house gas.
This is what is causing the hot weather and the moisture coming out of the atmosphere. Combined with the jet stream changes (La nino/Nina, I am not sure) is why the west coast is wetter than normal.
A good volcanic explosion will mess with the weather for years.
