Austin police in Texas are asking residents to call 311 if they get robbed near an ATM as the department struggles amid an increase in urban crime and staffing shortages.
The Austin Police Department posted a graphic in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, to urge residents to call 311 or make an online report if they’re robbed – 311 is a number usually used for non-emergency requests, as opposed to 911.
“Even if you are cautious & follow all the safety advice, you may still become the unfortunate victim of a robbery,” the Austin Police Department wrote on X. “Do you know what your next steps should be?”
“Make a police report & provide as much information as possible so we can recover your property quickly and safely,” the post added.

The new protocol comes as the Texas capital grapples with an increase in crime.
Compared to 2020, Austin has had a 77% increase in auto thefts, an 18% increase in aggravated assaults, and a 30% increase in murders. *** “We’re a growing city, a city that should be up around 2,000 officers and growing right now,” Villarreal said. “I’ve got about 1,475 officers in our police department and, you know, we’re moving in the wrong direction. There’s less and less and less resources to go out and do the job.” ***

If there are any Paul Kersey's in the area they should step up now.
I’d prefer curved female Guardians....
Your mail may be different.
No problem man. I’ll call the coroner. Problem solved.
What would happen if the police announced that they will not investigate plausible self-defense actions, not arrest any person defending himself against a criminal, regardless of what the DA or judges demand?
811, thanks to Joe Holman, Bell South!
Texas DPS was assisting and the City of Austin suspended whatever agreement was in place.
I do not recall what issue triggered the City to end the cooperation.
I'm all for emailing the dead assailant to the police. Maybe UPS can give a special "dead mugger to po-po" discount.
“This is the state capital, Abbott should step in with the Texas Rangers and or the national guard and secure the city.”
He has or had the Department of Public Safety working Austin because of the crime spike.
About a month ago he tried but was rebuffed by city officials.
Sounds like Los Angeles, here the LAPD puts up signs telling you to hide in the closet if someone breaks in...so it’s easier to find your body

Here is Austin’s 2024 budget top two items:
$87.2 million in planned capital spending for the Housing Department’s housing development assistance programs, aimed at creating or preserving deeply affordable housing.
$80.9 million in homelessness response efforts.
Here is allocation for policing:
$2.6 million for police cadet recruitment incentives.
Anyone see a problem? They are a welfare city not a city for citizen services.
Like California.
A shameful and disgraceful status.
“Their needs to be vagilities groups...”
The Vigilante group can call their lady’s auxillary the “Vagilantes”.
It is always a shame that the total incompetence of law enforcement, the corruption of judges and the inferiority of juries makes the system of pseudo justice so bad that good people have to risk their lives and future freedom to do the jobs the others should have done.
I would add a fourth item: 4. Austin is being overrun by ne’er-do-wells both foreign and domestic.
Nice of them to send a big GO signal to all criminals.
How’s that “Defund the Police” working out for you guys in Liberal Land?
The Guv’na lost more than the use of his legs. He swore months ago that if the mayor did not sort out this crappola he would occupy Austin with state coppers.
Nothing yet.
Just call 911 and say “I just got robbed and shot the SOB” and see how quickly they get there.
