Victor Davis Hanson: What the Left Did to Our Country
American Greatness ^ | 4 Sep, 2023 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 09/04/2023 4:44:00 AM PDT by MtnClimber

Will their upheaval succeed?

In the last 20 years, the Left has boasted that it has gained control of most of America institutions of power and influence—the corporate boardroom, media, Silicon Valley, Wall Street, the administrative state, academia, foundations, social media, entertainment, professional sports, and Hollywood.

With such support, between 2009-17, Barack Obama was empowered to transform the Democratic Party from its middle-class roots and class concerns into the party of the bicoastal rich and subsidized poor—obsessions with big money, race, a new intolerant green religion, and dividing the country into a binary of oppressors and oppressed.

The Obamas entered the presidency spouting the usual leftwing boilerplate (“spread the wealth,” “just downright mean country,” “get in their face,” “first time I’ve been proud of my country”) as upper-middle-class, former community activists, hurt that their genius and talents had not yet been sufficiently monetized.

After getting elected through temporarily pivoting to racial ecumenicalism and pseudo-calls for unity, they reverted to form and governed by dividing the country. And then the two left the White House as soon-to-be mansion living, mega-rich elites, cashing in on the fears they had inculcated over the prior eight years.

To push through the accompanying unpopular agendas of an open border, mandatory wind and solar energy, racial essentialism, and the weaponization of the state, Obama had begun demonizing his opponents and the country in general: America was an unexceptional place. Cops were racist. “Clingers” of the Midwest were hopelessly ignorant and prejudiced. Only fundamental socialist transformation could salvage a historically oppressive, immoral, and racist nation.

The people finally rebelled at such preposterousness. Obama lost his party some 1,400 local and state offices during his tenure, along with both houses of Congress. His presidency was characterized by his own polarizing mediocrity. His one legacy was Obamacare...

The problem isn’t that we’re being consumed by evil, but we’re being overwhelmed by stupid which, in the immortal words of the comic Ron White, can’t be fixed. Living off the grid is looking more and more attractive. We’ll all be living off the grid soon enough.

“IMO, putting all your faith in one man to save us is akin to worshipping a false god, which doesn’t usually work out well.”

Of course. But I’m not suggesting anything about faith or worship - I’m just saying work with what you have. If President Trump is willing to try, I’m willing to back him up - what’s the alternative?

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer whipped up hatred of America with a
violent mob outside the USSC’s doors. Chuckie threatened two justices by name.

The hate-filled violence-prone Schumer threatened that
<><>the named justices would soon “reap the whirlwind” of what they had sowed
<><>they would have no idea what was about to “hit” them.

Apparently the violent Schumer “knew.” One wonders
who Chuckie was plotting violence on the justices with?

Why doesn’t VDH start from the beginning of the progressive era and progressivism? Instead of just 20 years?

I don't think that we should be presumptuous and believe Victor doesn't know that. No doubt, he could easily write a 20–50-page dissertation or white paper on the entire progressive era. However, distilling any of that to a 1-2 page social media page is another story.

In my first post in this thread, I said this form of government will not be able to reform itself.

I firmly believe that especially at the federal level.

I think our time would be better spent, concentrating on State and Local elections.

States like Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Nevada, and maybe 1-2 more are right on the edge of going one way or the other in the red vs blue category.

IMO, if conservatives had a concentrated effort in those states, the Presidential elections would take care of themselves.

Florida is a prime example, DeSantis has not hurt the process but he did not start it either, but Florida has gone from a huge democrat advantage in registered voters to now a large republican advantage.

That success could be repeated in the states I listed, if Conservatives did that, it would do much more for the country than one man could do.

No doubt whatsoever.

Nice article.

I’ve always known obama was demonic from day 1, but the public was mesmerized by him. He was trained to use a hypnotic form of speech. That probably helped him, but the media was also working in unison to run cover for him.

Obama was always the domestic enemy used to overthrow the US government.

“The Left didn’t do it. The apathetic and lazy Right did not resist.”

Nope - the Left still did it. They PUBLICLY stated their goals and the rest of the country basically laughed it off, saying ‘they’re just kids, they’ll grow up’.

They NEVER grew up, instead they slid into positions of power and destroyed the country from the inside, as Lennon (and Lenin, for that matter) had instructed them to.

As to the right, they never ‘grew up’ either. Their were voices on fringes warning the country and would have GLADLY fought them. But they needed votes...

And that was where the REAL PROBLEM was - Middle America. People who don’t binge-drink politics - you tell them what our schools are doing to kids, and they are convinced that YOU are the nutcase, and that the schools only want what’s best for the children. I learned this the hard way with my first-born. After that, I knew not even people close to me would believe anything bad about the schools, so it was over and I stopped talking about it.

As to the root cause, I blame the co-called Greatest Generation. While it was great how they fought WW2, when they came home, rather than teach their kids how horrible people and governments can be, they instead thought they had permanently eradicated the problem and now everything was safe and it was time to make money. They were wrong. And so they threw their kids into the arms the enemy and the country never stood a chance.

That’s great - focusing on the state and local seems smart, and there may be no hope for reform at the national level.

But there is war of ideas taking place that drives politics on all levels - as someone once said - “a rising tide raises all ships”.

I’m not talking about donations, voter registration drives or getting involved with local politics - I’m talking about everyone having the balls to tell the truth even when it’s not popular.

President Trump does this at great personal cost, and the VERY least we can do is stand up for him in every conversation and on these FR threads. It doesn’t cost any money or time - it just takes a little courage.

He gets criticized at every turn here on FR and hardly anyone sticks up for him - it makes no sense.

I can’t say Go Trump! on FR without a swarm of trolls calling me a Trump worshipper, or cult zombie, or advising me not to put all my faith in one man.

The most recent pejorative used by these trolls is to call Trump supporters “Only-Trumpers”, as if we are blind followers who will stay home or vote for the Democrat if Trump is not on the ballot.

What is the point of constantly diminishing supporters as if we are a cult? I can only think of one reason - defeating Trump to protect the status quo - to protect the swamp.

It’s great if you think focusing on state and local elections is a better use of your time - but you can walk and chew gum at the same time. What is so hard about having something good to say about a man who is willing to fight for MAGA?

I’m tired of all the cold water being poured on any mention of Trump. He’s the best thing we have going at the moment and he’s under relentless attack from all sides - stand up for him.
