This is exactly right.
Carbon is life.
Just like animals eat plants (and other animals), plants eat plants, although usually not directly. Plants use photosynthesis (sunlight + water + CO2) to product carbohydrates (sound a little bit like hydrocarbons?) and release oxygen.
The whole reason there is so much hydrocarbon (what they call fossil fuels) locked up in the upper layers of the planet is because the cycle of life has been going on for so long. This byproduct of life enables more life.
Exchanging carbon from one state to another state is a constant process on this planet, and freeing up CO2 only enables more life.
