Moved to Oak Harbor, WA in the Summer of 1971 for my last year of high school. I’ve always considered it my home town and still visit it a couple of times each year to see my mom.
My dad was one of the top Chiefs in VA-115 “A’rabs”; serving as maintenance chief on one Viet Nam cruise and Leading Chief on a second cruise.
Whidbey Island is beautiful. One of the best stations for Navy personnel; although not so much for young sailors.
Glad you got a little something but I well know your frustration at not getting a nice steady rain. Your area is desperate for it.
Yay for that 88! Bet that felt REAL nice!
Since the rain’s through for the night, I went ahead and dumped the gauge a few minutes ago and it had .8 of an inch in it. That’ll make Dusty’s soybeans happy. As for most of the crops around here, they were planted a lot earlier and are through growing. The stalks and plants are dying so the rain did nothing for them.
Dusty’s beans were planted late because he had to wait for his winter wheat to dry out enough to harvest. They haven’t even bloomed yet. Maybe they will now that they’ve had a good drink after two HOT, bone-dry weeks. It’s going to be a very late harvest this year.
Yes, it did feel good...a bit humid, but no big deal there. September is usually a pretty wet month for us. We’ll just have to see if it comes up dry, too.
Nearly an inch! That’s great and those soybeans are gonna be smilin’ tomorrow and lookin’ so healthy. I know Dusty just breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Let’s hope El Niño allows Sept. to be a wet month for y’all this year. He sure has screwed things up for everyone this summer.
I’m sure Dusty was glad these fields got a drink. He plants all over the county and other fields have gotten rain when I haven’t. Like Saturday night when it was pouring along the highway and west of it and I didn’t get a drop over here.
Though it’s needed, I wasn’t happy with the rain today. I NEED to mow and I can’t until Wed. at the earliest and that’s iffy. The grass is so long and thick it’ll need time to dry out before I can mow, and it’s supposed to rain again tomorrow. I won’t mow Thursday because my back won’t have time to calm down for working at the museum Friday. Dang this gettin’ old stuff!
Yesterday at Comanche Lake:
Also we had two power blinks here at the homestead yesterday. Some parts of town lost power for a time yesterday evening.
How's everyone doing this morning?
Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))
Looks like Gizmo is making up for lost time, dragging you all over the place as he checks out his territory. He looks happy so I reckon everything is still as it should be. :-)
Lucky you. Just a couple of power blips rather than losing power like the other areas in town. Still a pain if you had to reset clocks.
The mowing and the rain are plotting against you, it seems! I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow so you can get that job done and can quit worrying about it. Or you’re going to have to invest in a combine to cut it. LOL!
The way this year has gone, I’d be shocked if it rained any time. I hope I am shocked. I’d love to be shocked. :)
It’s going to be a very sloooooow job getting the grass along the driveway done as it is. I wasn’t able to get to it last time I mowed because the intense heat set in, so it’s been 4 weeks since it was done. The yard isn’t too bad since it was so hot and dry the past two weeks but now that it’s rained, it’ll take off again. Yeah, I fret about it but I can only do so much.
As long as the “cold” front that came through is stalled, we’ll keep getting rain showers. That front is what will steer the hurricane over to the Atlantic rather than let it come up here.
No telling what will happen. Maybe you WILL be shocked next month. I’ll cheer right along with ya. LOL
Some of the filming for Top Gun II was done with the actors in actual planes from Whidbey and flying over the Cascades. Sometimes flying “through” the Cascades. Oftentimes will be cross-country skiing in the mountains and have a pair of airplanes (Growlers?) fly up the valley at very low level. With all of the trees we rarely see them, but you can sure hear and feel them.
You’ll be able to hear me cheering from clear over there. LOL! Even the tiny sprinkles we had were nice and they cooled things down, so there is that.
I’m guessing you’d better start with that driveway, or forget leaving home. LOL! Unless you have more than one way out.
I was stationed there, VP-1. Back when they were P-3 orions.
Well, the internet has gone wonky, so I’m on the ipad to say goodnight. I’m pretty tired anyhow. Went to the dentist today and that always stresses me, big time.
See ya tomorrow evening for the quiz. Hope you get a bit of mowing taken care of. Nite!
The cooldown counts, as well as the freshening of the air. And the plants all appreciated a little dampness, I’d say.
The grass doesn’t grow IN the driveway. LOL It’s along the sides of the driveway, between the gravel and the edges of the fields on each side. No problems at all driving in and out.
Ugh. Wonky internet. Such a pain. I hope it’ll behave tomorrow for ya.
Sleep well. Catch ya tomorrow for the quiz.
