Ron DeSantis was winner of the first 2024 Republican debate — the man best suited to unseat Trump
New York Post ^ | August 23, 2023 | Isaac Schorr

Only two questions mattered going into Wednesday night’s GOP primary debate.

Number one: Would any one viable candidate stand out among the crowd?

Number two: If the answer to the first was “Yes,” would our champion distinguish themselves by acting as the absent Donald Trump’s proxy or by setting up a favorable contrast with the frontrunner?

Trump’s decision to sit out the first forum of the 2024 primary season has been cast as a cautious, cowardly decision.

It was undoubtedly the latter, but despite the illusion of political safety, the choice also came with considerable risks.

If another candidate was able to command the stage, it would be a strong sign that the race is not predestined to end with Trump atop the ticket as so many pundits have suggested.

By not showing up, Trump risked ceding centerstage to a younger, less fearful rival.

Of course, not everyone on stage represented a genuine threat.

...

DeSantis answered the first with a resounding yes.

And even if he didn’t go for the kill on Wednesday, DeSantis demonstrated a willingness – and ability – to take Trump on.

He’s playing for the top prize, not a place in Trump’s Cabinet, or more likely his court at Mar-a-Lago.

With his performance, DeSantis cemented himself as the man best suited to unseat Trump as the undisputed champion of Republican politics.

While so many of his colleagues onstage replied to questions with a decided lack of purpose, DeSantis spoke both fluently and passionately.

...

Judging from Wednesday night, DeSantis alone appears to have the stuff to beat Trump.

It may remain an uphill battle, but by beginning the climb, he may have the man at the top of the mountain second-guessing his decision to sit Wednesday out.

“DeSantis can’t even hold on to the people who once supported him.”

That includes Trump.

Carlson has 177M views as we speak.

But nobody is talking about it.

Tucker lobbed softballs for about 45 minutes and that was it.

It is an article, one of many. An opinion. I mostly concur with the author. Who else here actually watched the debate end-to-end last night and has an opinion on who won?

Vivek self-destructed by being a jerk throughout the entire evening.

Like you said, DeSantis clearly won. I guess you've seen Vivek winning the debate in the polls too? About as fake a number as the 175 million "views". We know who the Trump supporters voted for as winning the debate and still Ron's numbers are strong.

Didn’t watch it but I did catch 45 minutes on the radio. Here’s what I heard. Vivek was smooth, Nicki was shrill, Chris was programmed, Pence had no energy, and Ron was a bore. At times it sounded like the Jerry Springer show. I plan to download the Trump twitter interview today.

Vivek is like Ron Paul, his supporters tend to be more passionate about him, than supporters of the other candidates.

“Desantis won”

Didn’t watch but this was a predetermined outcome. You do know that, right? Just like the rest of this kabuki theater.

Rubes like you lap it up.

Desantis’s “win” is akin to winning a stuffed toy at a small county fair. But you keep feeling good about it...lol

And how do you explain how nearly everyone that once was picked and worked with Trump no longer support him. Even his security guy has just flipped and is testifying against Trump.

I'm wondering if you watched it. Sure doesn't seem like it.

So says Murdock’s New Youk Post.

De Santis won, yeah right?!!!

“DeSantis had the most to lose and probably did because he didn’t meet, let alone beat, expectations,” Republican consultant Saul Anuzis said.

So, while DeSantis wasn’t the target of other candidates’ attacks, he also didn’t stand out in any memorable way.

Someone who did stand out was entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/columnist/2023/08/24/republican-debate-ramaswamy-haley-stand-out-desantis-stumbles/70664510007/

Despite consistently polling as the top Republican presidential contender behind Trump, DeSantis mostly failed to make an impression during the debate. He notably avoided many direct attacks like those lobbed at Ramaswamy, who has risen to third place in some polling as DeSantis has appeared to slip.

I did not mean to offend you in any way

Here is how Twitter/X views are calculated:

What metric is used for the View count?

The main Twitter video view metric is triggered when a user watches a video for at least 2 seconds and sees at least 50% of the video player in-view. This applies to View metrics for both uploaded videos and live broadcasts.
