Only two questions mattered going into Wednesday night’s GOP primary debate.
Number one: Would any one viable candidate stand out among the crowd?
Number two: If the answer to the first was “Yes,” would our champion distinguish themselves by acting as the absent Donald Trump’s proxy or by setting up a favorable contrast with the frontrunner?
Trump’s decision to sit out the first forum of the 2024 primary season has been cast as a cautious, cowardly decision.
It was undoubtedly the latter, but despite the illusion of political safety, the choice also came with considerable risks.
If another candidate was able to command the stage, it would be a strong sign that the race is not predestined to end with Trump atop the ticket as so many pundits have suggested.
By not showing up, Trump risked ceding centerstage to a younger, less fearful rival.
Of course, not everyone on stage represented a genuine threat.
...
DeSantis answered the first with a resounding yes.
And even if he didn’t go for the kill on Wednesday, DeSantis demonstrated a willingness – and ability – to take Trump on.
He’s playing for the top prize, not a place in Trump’s Cabinet, or more likely his court at Mar-a-Lago.
With his performance, DeSantis cemented himself as the man best suited to unseat Trump as the undisputed champion of Republican politics.
While so many of his colleagues onstage replied to questions with a decided lack of purpose, DeSantis spoke both fluently and passionately.
...
Judging from Wednesday night, DeSantis alone appears to have the stuff to beat Trump.
It may remain an uphill battle, but by beginning the climb, he may have the man at the top of the mountain second-guessing his decision to sit Wednesday out.

The Post and FOX don’t want to admit it, but, the winner of the debate was the one that didn’t appear for the debate.
There was nothing to debate when the preferred candidate by most republicans was not there and didn’t need to be there.
Winner, by a lot, Trump!
I had to work, so I listened also. I was hoping for a different DeSantes, but from what I heard, your description was spot on. Pence grew some balls and tried to act like a bully, to bad he wont do that with the Dems. Thought the comment about Nikki and Raytheon was perfect. Christie and his one trick ‘I hate Trump’ is beyond stupid. First time I heard Vivek, thought he sounded good. Scott was good but didn’t get much airtime. Don’t remember anything from the two Governor’s
“Didn’t watch it but I did catch 45 minutes on the radio. Here’s what I heard. Vivek was smooth, Nicki was shrill, Chris was programmed, Pence had no energy, and Ron was a bore. At times it sounded like the Jerry Springer show. I plan to download the Trump twitter interview today”
These idiots know that Trump is the most hated politician in America. He won’t win over suburban moms or independents.
DeSantis had a few good points, but was lackluster. Vivek had the best line of the night, a roundhouse knockout punch against Christie by throwing his criticism against Trump right back at Christie.
Haley was lying about Vivek. Pence was rude and said what we expected, nothing new or bold. Scott did worse than I thought. Asa and N.dakota were non starters.
I’d say Trump won the night.
DeSantis did well, but Trump didn’t cede anything.
How things stand post-debate has yet to be measured. First, there will be opinion polls over the coming weeks, and while polls are far from conclusive, they should reflect any major shifts from debate performances, or from Trump’s skipping the debate and getting arraigned.
I don’t expect the polls to change much. The supporters of the various candidates tend to think their guy won - so stellar performance is not always rewarded. More often, a major debate flub is what has the biggest effect.
I think Pence, Christie and Hutchinson flubbed big time by doubling down on the Democrat narrative that Trump lost in 2020 and is rightfully being prosecuted for trying to violate the Constitution and incite an insurrection.
The candidates at the debate can’t increase their standings significantly by winning over support from one another - the numbers just aren’t there - they would need to win over Trump supporters. Like it or not, saying Trump is a crook is never going to accomplish that - not in a million years. The ones that did that really shot themselves in the foot.
DeSantis and the others managed to avoid that trap and emphasized the DOJ political weaponization against Trump - that was the smart play for sure.
The true test will be the primaries and caucuses.
We shall see.
I’d say Trump was way out in the toolies while others were doing the heavy lifting.
I say, at this point, it’s Trump vs DeSantis, the rest can go away.
Never seen a more pathetic debate stage and forum in my life. Why should a question about pardoning Donald Trump even be asked? Is that the number one issue facing America. Why didn’t they discuss…….
Election integrity
Freedom of speech
Thousands of Human beings living and dying on American streets
How will we afford the dire consequences of the open border
The threat of nuclear war
True Scientific debate on global warming
The Keystone pipeline reopening
Out of control government soending
Deadly crime throughout America
Transgender surgery for minors
Etc
Etc
Etc
Etc
Etc
Christie did well??? He was the JERK the whole night and the AUDIENCE shouted him down multiple times... you must have stuck your head in the frig for those 10 minutes! Or you just continue to be a shill and dishonest.... hmmm which could it be???
Climate change was question 2 and abortion question 3 Seriously??? FOX sucks.
No need for name calling. I said both will need the others supporters in the general. Exactly what you said but you are only concerned with only trumpers.
And I am NOT a never trumper. I will vote for either man in the general because either will move the country to the right.
Btw you could have left it as the gope will never win another election and been more right. They didn’t let Trump win last time. They won’t let him (or any Republican candidate) win this time either.
I saw Heavy, but no lifting.
DeSantis won and is the only electable Republican in the race. Let not eat each other up. I’m concerned that the MSM didn’t broadcast the debate. That the same as Facebook burying our posts and making us invisible to America at large.
The bottom line is, Christie is one of the lowest-rated Governors in history.
He’s the reason a Republican will never be Governor in New Jersey ever again.

reeeeeeeeee! LOL.
Just like Bernie didn't win the nomination but did his part for the left to make socialism a cool thing to say and force the other candidates (including the ones who won the primaries and Dims running for other offices besides prez) to taut their socialist bona fides. Vivek seems to be doing that for us on the right to show us that we should expect our candidates to be passionate conservatives instead of mealy mouthed ones. If Vivek lasts long enough in the primary to affect the narrative like he did in last night's debate, we may be looking at having primary winner (be it Trump, DeSantis or someone else) who not just becomes president but is unashamedly conservative to the point of being a movement leader.
A gas lighter in full flaming fart, you are.
Assisting those that would seal the steal of 2020.
None of the clowns in that debate are even viable 3rd choice candidates for VP.

Trump promised that he would expose the corruption.
Promise kept.
Now he’ll prove it in court.
Then we’ll vote him back (a THIRD time!) on OUR “We The People Authority” to
