A rebellious campaign within the California Republican Party to break away from its historic opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage is dividing the party weeks before planned appearances by former President Trump and other GOP White House hopefuls.
A proposed platform overhaul, which could be voted on at the state GOP’s fall convention in Anaheim, is a remarkable break from conservative dogma in the state that nurtured Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon.
“It’s a seismic shift but it’s a shift born out of practical necessity. Look at what’s happening not just in California but in much more conservative states, realizing antiabortion, anti-same-sex marriage stances are no longer tenable,” said Jessica Levinson, an election law professor at Loyola Law School. “I think it shows their acknowledgment that the sand has shifted underneath their feet.”
Political platforms, while largely symbolic, are supposed to embody a party’s principles and core beliefs. Debate about modifying them often prompts controversy.

Yeah - I remember when Democrats broke from their core beliefs.
That would have been... Never.
Sounds like a bunch of GOOBs have been camping out on the RATs’ plantation.
DON’T WORRY I GOT THIS
Well, they have no chance of winning any races so it really doens’t matter what they do.
It figures, since I have lived here for 60 plus years, the single event that ended and doomed the Republican Party to being irrelevant was the allowance of the Girly Man(Arnold Schwarzeneger) to become a member. Anyone with an IQ above 40 knows he is and always has been a wild eyed leftist marxist democrat.
As Califonia goes....
Friendly Reminder that the California GOP is wholly owned by Kevin McCarthy....
“Big Tent” losers.
Like so many mainstream Christian denominations, the Republican Party is growing. Growing more fluid in their core beliefs and convictions. Well as I have stated before, I am no longer a Republican and next year I will vote for no Republican candidate unless his name is Donald John Trump. The rest can go to Hades.
Yep. It’s going to be a DEM House, Senate, and POTUS in 2025. And you think it’s miserable now. Just wait.
Well, the battle over homosexual marriage is over.
The battle over abortion is now a state by state battle. California, being a liberal state, has liberal abortion laws and will for the foreseeable future.
There’s no real consensus here on Free Republic about what should be done about abortion. So it probably makes no difference at all if a Republican party in a liberal state does not strongly oppose abortion.
Proponents of a “Big Tent” Republican party.

If they can’t be bribed, scared sht*less. Afraid for their families, and have trumped up charges, there’s always positions in the demonRATs hole.
Well, I was referring to the California GOP, not the national GOP. But, you may be right, anyway.
“Big tents” are for circuses.
If we don't vote for Trump in the primaries, the Democrats will have a hard time mobilizing their voters. But if Trump is on the ballot, they will vote AGAINST Trump.
The RINOs have been wanting to do this for years.
Thank God people like Phyllis Schlafly and Ken Blackwell were on the platform committee.
But then Reagan used to talk about a big tent Republican party. So there’s that.
First thought: They've turned into Episcopalians.
Second thought: Our Lord warned against building things on sand rather than rock.
