A [Hawaii] State Official Refused To Release Water For West Maui Fires Until It Was Too Late

With wildfires ravaging West Maui on Aug. 8, a state water official delayed the release of water that landowners wanted to help protect their property from fires. The water standoff played out over much of the day and the water didn’t come until too late.

The dispute involved the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ water resource management division. DLNR delayed releasing water requested by West Maui Land Co. to help prevent the spread of fire, sources familiar with the situation said.

Specifically, according to accounts of four people with knowledge of the situation, M. Kaleo Manuel, a Native Hawaiian cultural practitioner and DLNR’s deputy director for water resource management, initially balked at West Maui Land Co.’s requests for additional water to help prevent the fire from spreading to properties managed by the company.

According to the sources, Manuel wanted West Maui Land to get permission from a taro, or kalo, farm located downstream from the company’s property. Manuel eventually released water but not until after the fire had spread.

When I worked for Calif Div of Forestry back in my firefighter days, we had 3 fire trucks at our station that pumped water from Lakes/streams/swimming pools to hose nozzle.

As long as the water source had water, we could pump until dry.

13. Re Democrats, what else can they f*ck up. Anything they get near, on land, in the sea, or in the air.

They are universal destroyers.

I saw that first hand. Was working with a tall houlee looking guy asking questions in a suburb of Honolulu. One guy he confronted just stared at him never uttering a sound. I asked the same first question and the guy answered me and on all the rest. While not Hawaiian I do not look like a “main lander”.

I also think the reason they are letting San Francisco fall into ruin is so they can push the people out grab the land cheap and turn the city into a wealthy haven like Monaco with full, city-wide lockdown in 20 minutes from any outside threats. Perfect city for it geographically as there is water on 3 sides. All according to plan.

Occam's Razor.

The San Francisco bums are gonna be REAL surprised when they get the bum's rush out of the city.

Once you spray salt water on farm land, it’s liable not to grow stuff quite as well as it used to: it was a “taro farm”, whatever that is.

Noun: taro
1. Edible starchy tuberous root of taro plants
2. Herb of the Pacific islands grown throughout the tropics for its edible root and in temperate areas as an ornamental for its large glossy leaves
3. Tropical starchy tuberous root

after reading all of the comments to the original article, there seems to be some residual doubt about whether this guy is obviously guilty of anything (other than being the wrong person at the wrong time in an impossible situation).
