Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mali’s interim president, Assimi Goita Tuesday had a telephone conversation over events unfolding in Niger – a development that is likely to raise concerns among Western leaders about Russia’s increasing influence in the West African region.
“At the initiative of the Malian side, Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President of the Transitional Period of the Republic of Mali Assimi Goita,” the Kremlin said in a statement on Tuesday.
Putin’s call for a peaceful resolution comes days after West African leaders ordered the “activation” and the “deployment” of a regional standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger following President Mohamed Bazoum’s removal in a coup d’etat by the presidential guard in late July.

Mali calls Putin ( prob to ask for military assistance): Putin tries to calm the situation with diplomacy; headlines scream “ West “ growing alarm” over Russian influence in the region”
About right?
So this coup is okay? No surprise there.
Nice if they could do the same in Ukraine.
Irony is ironic.
Putin did not condone the coup ( has not from the beginning) and when Mali called him, advised peaceful negotiations.
It’s a Nigerien political matter to decide.
The Russians are not the outsiders instigating a military invasion here.
So much for being a “ threat”
about right. France stands to lose big time as Niger is their largest exporter for uranium which their pro-nuke energy network needs in abundance. They had a sweet heart deal due to old colonialist system in place there. I have a bet that Wagner forces will be there to ‘secure’ the uranium mine and this will be a fortunate coop for Russia.
What a bunch of BS. The Preepers hero.
Putin’s my hero. He’s saving Christianity from the “globohomos”./s
France is the one threatening to send forces to protect its mines in Niger
I understand some Nigeriens went to Mali to talk about getting Wagner support, as Wagner has men in Mali doing training and running COIN ops, but no indication this will happen.
Wagner is on limited security assistance contracts with several govts, would not be manned or equipped to go into a battle with French forces and their lapdogs killing other Africans for uranium mines. Not only is taking and holding facilities a mission they are not structured for, it sounds like a political briar patch for Russia.
Besides, Russia already has plentiful reserves of the raw materials the West wants from Africa: uranium, gold and oil.
Two weeks after the coup in Niger, France has abandoned its tough tone on the crisis and is now inclining towards diplomatic solutions, with military action seemingly ruled out for now, experts said.
West Africa’s regional bloc ECOWAS had given coup leaders a deadline of last Sunday to reinstate elected president Mohamed Bazoum, or face potential use of force.
But the Niger’s new rulers defied the ultimatum and it elapsed with no action being taken. The leaders of ECOWAS — the Economic Community of West African States — meet again on Thursday in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.
