In 2018, he published an opinion piece in The New York Times titled “Cruelty at the Border Is Not Justice” in which he characterized the Trump administration family separation policy as “unconscionable” and “inexcusable.”

Excellent digging, and just as I suspected. He's a leftiet phony.

A lot of religious “conservatives” in Iowa would not be considered conservative in Texas or Florida. They vote pro-life and have memorized the bible. However, they are often anti-gun, pro-big government, pro-immigration, etc.

There are a lot of pro-gun, anti-big government, anti-immigration conservatives in Iowa, but they are of the blue-collar Trump supporting variety (i.e. not bible-thumpers like Van Der Platts).
