DeSantis ditches his campaign manager, but it's a reset that may have come too late
Business Insider ^ | Aug 8, 2023 | Brent D. Griffiths

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday completed the full-scale reboot of his once-promising presidential campaign, reassigning his campaign manager and elevating a loyal hand from his governor's office.

The news comes just weeks before the GOP field will face off in the first presidential primary debate in Milwaukee, a chance to reverse a summer that has seen DeSantis, Trump's best-positioned challenger, slip dangerously far behind former President Donald Trump in national polling.

Like every reset — DeSantis insists it's a "reload" — the real question remains on if DeSantis waited too long to execute the retooling. Past presidential cycles are littered with candidates who tried to fix things only to be washed out. Both President Trump and President Joe Biden ended their first successful runs with new campaign managers, but their experiences, especially Trump's, are an exception to the rule.

James Uthmeier, DeSantis' chief of staff in Tallahassee, will now lead his campaign, news first reported by The Messenger. DeSantis' former campaign manager Generra Peck, who also led DeSantis' midterm reelection romp, will remain as a chief strategist. Peck had been the subject of multiple reports questioning the direction of the Florida Republican's campaign.

As The Messenger pointed out, Uthmeier has no campaign management experience.

DeSantis trails Trump by 38 points in FiveThirtyEight's weighted national average. While pundits often dismiss early polling, FiveThirtyEight found that a review of 40 years of data shows that can be predictive and becomes even more so as we reach the second half of the year before state primary and caucuses begin. Even more concerning for the former governor is that he is also lagging behind Trump in Iowa...

The reality, as Politico summed it up recently, is that a DeSantis comeback this large and an accompanying Trump collapse would be unprecedented.

I understand that Trump’s shenanigans’s have already been baked in among most of the GOP electorate. The Bragg indictments, the Smith indictments from last week and the upcoming GA indictments are all crass political jokes, and Trump would eventually prevail.

Not so with the Mara Lago documents case. Listening to Jonathan Turley, Trump has serious legal exposure on those indictments and could very well be found guilty on one or more of those charges. He could have easily avoided that fiasco by returning those documents as requested. Instead, he remained stubborn and even lied to his own lawyers. A conviction would send this election into uncharted waters. It’s better not to go there.

While in a way it’s admirable that Trump’s army stays so loyal, they should also consider that the last time he won anything was when Hillary was on the ballot.

President Trump made dumb moves—a lot of them.

If I had to list his ten dumbest moves I would not even put the Mar a Largo stuff on the list.

(His VP choice tops my list—btw.)

Hillary had a home brewed server with a truckload of national security stuff on it—blatantly violating laws fully understand by every federal employee ever—and nothing happened to her.

The Mar a Largo stuff—even if totally valid—is child’s play by comparison.

Remember - Trump was supposed to be the inevitable victor in the 2016 Iowa caucuses - until Cruz defeated him.

It sounds like you've read too much Fake News. Cruz fraudently stole the 2016 Iowa Caucuses, and I believe President Trump sued him for it.

The Mar a Largo stuff—even if totally valid—is child’s play by comparison.

While that is your opinion, this self-inflicted act of arrogance has put him in serious legal jeopardy (per Turley and Andy McCarthy). His enemies set the trap - he walked right into it.

Exactly. But they are too enamored by their idol the Mar-a-Lago Cheez-Us.

I suppose we all need to get ready for Biden’s second term - he is the true NeverTrumper. The sycophants would prefer to lose while claiming to be patriotic Americans.

President Lincoln made major war blunders that led to the death of thousands of union soldiers—didn’t hurt his reputation in the slightest.

You need to look at the big picture—or the unfolding events will make no sense at all for you.

“You need to look at the big picture—or the unfolding events will make no sense at all for you”.

The big picture is this - a 2024 General Election that will decide the future course of this nation. I like Trump, but I also like winning elections. Never before has the nominee of a major party been forced to duck and dodge and maneuver through multiple legal proceedings while at the same time attempting to run an effective General Election campaign.

Trump’s army may feel vindicated by helping him bully his way to the GOP nomination, but they will then unwittingly force the nation to endure another four years of Biden (or more likely Harris). Remember - the last time Trump won anything Hillary was on the ballot. He lost in the 2018 mid terms, the 2020 general election and the 2022 mid terms.

“I also like winning elections.”

The big picture is this—it does not matter “what you like”.

Trump will be the nominee—and he may win or lose.

It is what it is.

Really, at this point it’s probably better for Desantis to withdraw , concentrate on Florida and start rebuilding his image for 2028

Why does the article refer to DeSantis as former governor?

DeSantis probably has a bigger problem with his joining with the democrats to say that there was no cheating/stealing of the election in 2020. Then he goes on to support the lawfare against Trump.

This is not about Trump, but about a big concern of many republican primary voters that their candidate, if not approved by the democrats, are being hindered through the abuse of power and other shenanigans. DeSantis betrayed all these voters.

Switching around your campaign staff is not going to fix what he has said already.

I don’t see how his background as a JAG gave him experience that will be an asset as President.
