Lisbon (AFP) – Pope Francis on Thursday urged young people to focus on caring for the planet and fighting climate change, calling for an "integral ecology" that melds environmental protection with the fight against poverty and other social problems.
The 86-year-old Francis has made the protection of the environment a cornerstone of his pontificate, noting in his landmark 2015 "Laudato Si" (Praised Be) encyclical that the planet was "beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth".
"We must recognise the dramatic and urgent need to care for our common home. Yet this cannot be done without a real change of heart," he said during an open-air address to students at Lisbon's Catholic University on the second day of his visit to Portugal.
"We cannot be satisfied with mere palliative measures or timid and ambiguous compromises," he added, speaking in his native Spanish.
The leader of the world's 1.3 billion Roman Catholics said: "Keep in mind that we need an integral ecology, attentive to the sufferings both of the planet and the poor. We need to align the tragedy of desertification with that of refugees, the issue of increased migration with that of a declining birth rate".
"Instead of polarised approaches, we need a unified vision, a vision capable of embracing the whole."

Savings souls is out of fashion. He’s cooler than that.
Another reason to stop dumping money into the Catholic Church. But an even bigger reason is that Catholic Charities USA is one of the largest enablers of illegal immigration of all the NGOs that are determined to destroy this country by importing millions of people who have no idea what the US is about, but only see fat welfare benefits to be had as soon on as they get a toe over the border. Our “poor” have a better lifestyle than most of Europe’s middle class so you can imagine how tempting it is to the really poor in south and Central America.
ANTI Pope. NOT the Pope. Evil surges in him.
Someone needs to tell Pope Charlatan I to stick it.
Who dumps money into the Catholic church? I’m not Catholic but I’ve been to more than a few masses and have never witnessed them pass the plate.
Baptists, charismatic, pentecostals, AG’s, Methodists (at el)... they’ll pass the plate a few times per service, and one for summer camp or the speaker. But Catholics... oddly not, unless I’m missing a sleight of hand somewhere.
how to fight climate change - stop buying cheap manufactured goods from China
how to fight poverty - get a job
Matt 26:11 For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always.
Might be a good idea to put our Lord first and the souls of those he seeks to save before we torment the poor by denying their needs by placing climate change above the salvation message.
The great commission was to go forth and preach the gospel unto salvation, to make disciples.
Matt 28:19 Go [a]therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” [b]Amen.
We are called first to spread the message, once salvation occurs their is a natural tendency to be a good steward of God’s creation.
The “pope” has it completely backwards.
Hey Pope....ONLY GOD controls the climate!!
RCINC is the oldest most profitable multinational corporation on the planet. They cry poverty but are somehow always able to afford 500$/hr defense attorneys to smear victims of sexual abuse by their employees (priests).
RCINC pushing illegal immigration but the Vatican is surrounded by thick 40’ high walls and tightly controlled access through gates patrolled by an armed force
Fight poverty - stop throwing money at the Catholic Church - God doesn’t get to use it anymore...
I know people hate such contrasts but you are not wrong.
Also note Jesus taught amongst the masses, preaching in the language of the commoner and from within the crowd, making the message accessible to all with next to nothing for worldly possessions. He encouraged and comforted, rarely commanding and when he did he did it by referenced his Father’s scriptures.
The pope dictates from on high making pronouncements in complicated academic language while remaining aloof and in control of one of the world’s largest collections of wealth.
Something really is amiss there.
I am a Catholic, and you can believe that they pass the plate plus they send you weekly envelopes with a weekly “suggested donation” every quarter. For the last couple of years I’ve been tossing them in the trash. Why should I donate to an organization that actively undermines everything that I believe in? Pope Frankie (Karl Marx reborn) promulgates the climate crisis bull. The church hierarchy with the exception of abortion follows the Democrat party platform to the letter: they actively assist illegal immigrants, they lobby for gun control, they criticize Republican candidates from the pulpit, etc.
Job 38:34-38
“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
So that an abundance of water will cover you?
“Can you send forth lightnings that they may go
And say to you, ‘Here we are’?
“Who has put wisdom in the innermost being
Or given understanding to the mind?
“Who can count the clouds by wisdom,
Or tip the water jars of the heavens,
When the dust hardens into a mass
And the clods stick together?
I believe GOD will do a great job with the climate, unless you don't believe in the Holy Father, you POS Pope!
What you say is totally true. The CC is a Marxist organization. Some individual priests may still be about faith and God, but the hierarchy is pretty much an extension of the Democrat party.
They pass a basket.
And like an activist Supreme Court judge, the Pope would say what Jesus really meant was, "Go into all the world and be a climate change activist and address poverty by applying this precept: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs".
Some may disagree with the Pope's interpretation but hey, you're not the Pope! /s
