Here’s How Voters Feel About Trump, Even Those Who Wrongly Believe He's Guilty of 'Serious Federal Crimes'
Townhall ^ | 07/31/2023 | Spencer Brown

New polling from The New York Times and Siena College shows a now-familiar picture of the state of the Republican presidential primary field: Trump with a dominant lead, DeSantis a distant second, and all the other candidates somewhere in the rear with three percent or less.

According to the Times/Siena poll conducted July 24-27, the numbers shook out to 54 percent for Trump, 17 percent for DeSantis and three percent for Haley, Scott, and Pence while Ramaswamy and Christie tied with two percent. The remaining declared candidates failed to reach one percent.

The shellacking Trump is shown to be delivering to his GOP rivals among likely primary voters in the Times/Siena first survey of the 2024 campaign seems to be pretty universal across different demographics:

Mr. Trump held decisive advantages across almost every demographic group and region and in every ideological wing of the party, the survey found, as Republican voters waved away concerns about his escalating legal jeopardy. He led by wide margins among men and women, younger and older voters, moderates and conservatives, those who went to college and those who didn’t, and in cities, suburbs and rural areas.

The poll shows that some of Mr. DeSantis’s central campaign arguments — that he is more electable than Mr. Trump, and that he would govern more effectively — have so far failed to break through. Even Republicans motivated by the type of issues that have fueled Mr. DeSantis’s rise, such as fighting “radical woke ideology,” favored the former president.

Notably, when primary voters were asked to choose between Trump or DeSantis in a head-to-head contest, even 22 percent of "voters who believe [Trump] has committed serious federal crimes" supported the 45th president — "a greater share than the 17 percent that Mr. DeSantis earned from the entire G.O.P. electorate."

Republican primary voters polled for the latest survey were more likely to say that DeSantis is "likable" and "moral" while Trump is seen as "fun," "able to beat Joe Biden" and "get things done" as a "strong leader." Despite the DeSantis campaign's efforts to show the Florida governor as the more electable candidate in the general election, more GOP primary voters still think Trump can beat Biden this time around.

The Times explains further:

A strong majority of Republicans surveyed, 58 percent, said it was Mr. Trump, not Mr. DeSantis, who was best described by the phrase “able to beat Joe Biden.” And again, it was Mr. Trump, by a lopsided 67 percent to 22 percent margin, who was seen more as the one to “get things done.”

Mr. DeSantis narrowly edged Mr. Trump on being seen as “likable” and “moral.” Interestingly, the share of Republicans who said Mr. Trump was more “fun” than Mr. DeSantis (54 percent to 16 percent) almost perfectly mirrored the overall horse race.

Sure, it's still early in the primary race. But there hasn't been much that's changed the math of the field. Each indictment against Trump has only bolstered his standing and — despite polls showing an uphill slog for the former president in the general election — Republicans still think he's better positioned to retire Biden and are willing to support him, even if they believe he's committed serious crimes.

This is horrible news for America.

It indicates people are giving up on the notion, that those with good and noble intentions, can prevail in politics.

It shows that many Republicans are so sick and tired of losing to the left's dirty tricks, that they just want us to now have dirty tricksters running our party as well.

This will lead us all to oblivion, because, once you have everyone on BOTH sides twisting if not breaking the laws, then, only the very best at twisting and breaking the law will rise to the top.

That's how Biden got there, because that's how they do things on the left. This poll indicates at least some people on the right are ready to release our own set of rats to fight them.

I disagree, completely, obviously. You fight your best, good and fair fight. You win or lose, but at least you go home with your dignity, and know you fought for what's good and right. Because if you're just playing dirty to win, you're not really winning.

If I was a fair voter and lover of the United States, it’s history and Constitution (which I am) and not just a moronic partisan moonbat, I would acknowledge how hard the democrats tried to punish Trump for winning the election and beating Hillary and how the DOJ and government went out of line to persecute him. To have the FBI LIE on a FISA warrant should be a huge concern to any normal American, among so many other illegal acts that should have sent people to jail!

The Left acts like this is all okay, or just ignores it and calls it a “conspiracy theory”, and in reality, it is far, far worse than anything that Nixon and his administration did in 1972-74! Their hatred for Trump has scrambled their thought processes and made the crimes committed even worse because they were never properly investigated and punished.

Trump hatred killed the rule of law and began the serious rule of men, or rule of some men.

Because of this, my anger wells up every time I see the news media treat Trump’s so-called crimes as real events knowing how much they have truly lied to us over the years. Ignoring the past and continuing on with stories and opinion pieces and panels about Trump’s legal troubles is actually deep salt in an already painful wound! When I hear the crop of airheads promoting this I absolutely remember it was the same people who pushed every lie about Russia, some Nazis are okay people, Mexicans send their worst here, he interfered with election with that phone call...

No.

I will vote for Trump, not because I am a blind follower, but I strongly believe these people mentioned above—the democrats, idiot leftists, the news media and the Deep State, have in fact destroyed our constitutional republic and only a Trump victory next year will fix it.

It is the Last Stand.

I understand what you’re saying, but my way of thinking is that we’ve been had by RINOs for a long time. Why do people like Mitch McConnell always win? Because he cheats just like the D’s do. There’s a reason the Republicans don’t fight to support Trump, and it’s because they’ve used the same voting malfeasance that the Democrats do to win elections. We haven’t had fair elections for a freaking long time. The R’s are just fine with their good ole boys club. Don’t you remember McConnell shaking Biden’s hand after the election?

I don’t think Trump is guilty of what they accuse him of. That’s just the way I see it. They want him out by whatever means they can do it with. Which makes me want him more.

Your R vs D con is dead..

It’s Trump against your Swamp’s dirty tricks..

Your co owned swamp spied on Trump from his announcement in 2015.

And has been accusing him of crimes they’ve committed.

The swamp needs to be oliterated.
That means the R team swamp loses too

Can’t happen soon enough

Has “electability” ever won the day? John Kerry, McCain and Romney all won their primaries on electability. So did Hillary in 2k8 but the primary voters were smart enough to see through that. I think Jeb, Kaish and Cruz also ran with that argument.

For not wanting criminals in charge of our party, or our country? Ridiculous. Because that's what these people said they wanted.

They believe Trump is guilty of "serious crimes" but still want him in charge, anyway. So take your love for Trump out of it, and they are willing to accept leaders who are criminals, because they think that is what can work, so long as it's the "right criminal."

But it doesn't work. It's just a race to the bottom, appointing criminals into power, where we all lose. Lead that charge to the bottom if you want to. But I will continue to oppose it.

Trump didn’t commit any crimes. They have sullied his name and it’s BS. If you let that stand the you REALLY lose the thread. He also wasn’t in collusion was Putin in case you were wondering. Just to put a period on this, he also didn’t pee in a bed for Barack and his wife to sleep in it. Sheesh. Get a grip.

“Serious Crimes”. Also not clear what they asked. They may have asked if they think Trump is guilty of not returning documents to NARA in a timely manner, they said yes and the author said that was a “serious crime”. If they asked the question thusly: “do you think Trump is a murderer?” Or, “Do you think Trump gave nuclear codes to Vladimir Putin?”, and you got the same results you may have an argument. Such as it is, you have no real argument.

As I said in #14, take Trump’s name out of it, if you have to. My posts are just expounding on standard well known cliche’s about ethics and moral authority.

You ever heard the phrase “a race to the bottom” or know what it means?

How about the line “when you only put crooks in government, only the best crooks can get to the top.”

Basic stuff.

Like I said, without knowing the question the results are useless. Do you believe Trump is a crook, Yes, do you think he should be the nominee, yes is how the results are framed but now how the questions were asked. More BS

“Trump HASN’T committed any crimes what so ever.”

There are so many criminal laws at the books on federal, state, and local level, that very few of us can complete a day without committing a criminal act.
