The Atlantic Ocean’s sensitive circulation system has become slower and less resilient, according to a new analysis of 150 years of temperature data — raising the possibility that this crucial element of the climate system could collapse within the next few decades.
Scientists have long seen the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, as one of the planet’s most vulnerable “tipping elements” — meaning the system could undergo an abrupt and irreversible change, with dramatic consequences for the rest of the globe. Under Earth’s current climate, this aquatic conveyor belt transports warm, salty water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, and then sends colder water back south along the ocean floor. But as rising global temperatures melt Arctic ice, the resulting influx of cold freshwater has thrown a wrench in the system — and could shut it down entirely.
The study published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications suggests that continued warming will push the AMOC over its “tipping point” around the middle of this century. The shift would be as abrupt and irreversible as turning off a light switch, and it could lead to dramatic changes in weather on either side of the Atlantic.
“This is a really worrying result,” said Peter Ditlevsen, a climate physicist at the University of Copenhagen and lead author of the new study. “This is really showing we need a hard foot on the brake” of greenhouse gas emissions.

Quick, everybody! Chicken Little has fallen and she can’t get up! Bring pots and ladles and some onions and paprika; somebody light the stove and cut more wood- there’s not a moment to lose!
I thought the clot-shot and the JimJonesJab solved all of those problems.
If you can’t trust “scientists” who can you trust?
Ha ha HA HA ha....
Of course. How else would politicians get rich? If there was no one on the take there could be no kick backs?
Have they given up on the Poles melting so they’ll try something else ?
I suspect the human kind get treated similarly on occasion.
WHAT A LOAD OF HORSESHIT
Regarding earth’s environmental systems, it’s a foregone conclusion that if it happened in the past, it will happen again. There exists factual evidence that both polar regions were once free of ice and the Sahara Desert was one a rain forest. One can reasonably conclude that there were no gasoline fueled cars back then.
Corellian death rays of the sea.
aannnd exactly how many billions or trillions will it take to narrowly avert this disaster in the next 10 years!!!????
lol - I’m buying!
Predicting the future, using the word Could.
Money and control.
The other day I spoke with an acquaintance and he brought up the “record” heat that I said was not record at all reminding him of the summer of 1980 when Dallas had 42 days in a row and a total of 69 days in excess of 100. Has not happened again since. His retort was to say, “You don’t believe in climate change?” I said I thought it was global warming they are worried about.
I reminded him of the short temperature record often cited, that we have created heat islands were there were none when temperatures were recorded 100 years ago, that it was nearly 2 degrees warmer in Roman times, that the ice record shows times of much colder and hotter periods than this and much higher and lower CO2 levels, that the chicoms have now opted out of the Paris treaty (never were in anyway) and our efforts are futile and stupid without rest of the world participation and that we are simply hurting ourselves adding that anthropogenic climate change is not very likely at all, that mankind’s impact is paltry compared to all other effects. I even brought up the large number of articles in the 60s and early 70s in the global cooling panic of those days and how otherwise serious people suggested things like coating the poles with black paint, oil or tar.
“So you don’t believe it is getting hotter?” he says.
I said that it may be, weather changes and we can’t do a thing about it. After all that he insists that we must change all our ways turning the world upside down.
These people are seized by panic or not smart enough to reason. They are trapped by their emotions and ideology. Some of them now even admit it is not our actions that make these changes but that we must still change our ways or face the existential crisis they all are terrified of. It is bizarre.
It is the sun, sunspot activity, our orbit around the sun that changes, cycles of the ocean, volcanic activity and magnetic field that change our climate in ways that make anything we do puny by comparison. We are helpless and powerless to change these forces. These changes have come before and most of life on earf survived, it may not in the future and we may not in the future. Those are the breaks. The erf is probably not eternal, nor is the sun or any of the other stars or worlds and time and space are infinite. Too big and numbered for us to imagine. There is no end.
So global warming will trigger the next ice age? Perhaps. Some models suggest it could. That would be bad news.
The good news, however, is that the solution to the next age is exactly the same as the solution to global warming ... and the solution to cancer, killer asteroids, kudzu and halitosis as well: socialism, the abolition of a free society, the allocation of all income and careers by political czars, downward leveling except for the political class, etc.
I.e., “social justice.” This is the cure for EVERYTHING.
If the concern were truly about climate change and CO2, the left would be all in for nuclear power. They aren’t. Because a rational energy policy to support a society of abundance would be a major impediment to the real agenda.
Not a collapse! I fell down and can’t get up.
The three heaviest industrial polluters and creators of “greenhouse gas emissions” on earth—China, India, and most of the Far East—are never ever the target for these dire warnings. It’s always the U.S. these people want to talk at. That’s what tells me this is all crap.
And give the climate grifters more money.
