I just listened to the song for the first time. I’d have to say it being #1 is due to people’s desire to make a statement on the division in America and not so much because it’s a great piece of music. It sort of lays there and there’s zero punch. Maybe it works for people who like very simple songs. A one line chorus, “try that in a small town” really does have me singing along. There’s not a single hook in the song, including the chorus. The mix kinda sucks too. The guitar is buried and there’s not even the briefest of a solo. Then there isn’t a single key change in the entire song. It’s a simple song that reflects people’s tacit disapproval. It lays there just like the people.
