But the Ukraine peace agreements were about as ironclad, copper-plated and bulletproof a treaty as you can get.

Lol...name them.

Easily. First two treaties that come to mind where Russia: signed and promised not to attack Ukraine:
1. Budapest Memorandum
2. Russian-Ukrainian Friendship Treaty.
Both were violated the second Moscow saw as advantageous.

For Russia, any peace treaty not grounded in a strategic reality that makes sense for Russia NOT to invade again is worthless and leadS to more war five or ten years later.

Not for the first time:

Kursk Demarcation, 1918

Establishment of the administrative border between the RSFSR and Ukrainian SSR, 1927

The Transfer of Crimea from Soviet Russia to Soviet Ukraine, 1954

Helsinki Agreement, 1975

Belovezha Accords, 1991 (Reinforced Helsinki in light of the dissolution of the USSR)

Establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), 1991

Crimean autonomy referendum recognition, 1991

Budapest Memorandum (the ACTUAL first Minsk agreement), 1993

The Partition Treaty on the Status and Conditions of the Black Sea Fleet, 1997

Russian–Ukrainian Friendship Treaty, also 1997

The Treaty Between the Russian Federation and Ukraine on the Russian-Ukrainian State Border, 2093 (signed by Putin himself, lasted less than a year before Russia violated it over the Tuzla Spit).

Oh...

How’s your Chinese?

https://www.gov.cn/jrzg/2013-12/05/content_2543057.htm

Excerpt, translated:

“China speaks highly of Ukraine’s unilateral abandonment of nuclear weapons and its accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons signed on July 1, 1968 as a non-nuclear-weapon state. According to UN Security Council Resolution 984 and the statement of the Chinese government on providing security guarantees to Ukraine on December 4, 1994, the Chinese side promised unconditionally not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine, which is a non-nuclear-weapon state, and to be aggressed by the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine or in case of threat of such aggression, provide corresponding security guarantees to Ukraine.”

That’s China’s reinforcement of Budapest. So, Putin violated Ukrainian independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within weeks of China signing security guarantees to Ukraine that effectively mean, if there’s a nuclear incident in Ukraine and the finger points at Russia, guess what?

China joins the UK and USA in delivering its security guarantees.

Ever wondered why the CSTO ‘Stans have been flipping the bird to Putin ever since Zaporozhzhia and Chernobyl were occupied?

China maybe advised them that their slow walked support for Russia has a red line, and if Russia crosses it, China will sever all support for Russia.
