“Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to attend an economic summit in South Africa next month”
Let him go and then intercept his plane on the way and force it down or shoot it down. He’s a criminal and he needs to be treated like one.
That’d probably start a nuclear war, so not the best idea.
On the other hand, South Africa is telling Russia that it has a bit of a dilemma, because it has treaty obligations and unlike Putin, it recognises that breaking a treaty you signed has adverse political consequences geopolitically.
How many solemn binding treaties filed at the UN did Russia sign with Ukraine, pledging to respect its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity again?
Six?
The Russia-Chechnya wasn’t witnessed and counter-signed by USA and the UK, and then endorsed by China and France. (China, by the way, formally signed its own Budapest equivalent with Ukraine in 2013). Russia probably figured it could break that with minimal blowback.
But the Ukraine peace agreements were about as ironclad, copper-plated and bulletproof a treaty as you can get. Breaking them is about on the same level as, well, ignoring an ICC arrest warrant while being a signatory to the ICC.
What did you think about the USA when it illegally invaded Libya? Or when it bombed Serbia? How about taking out Saddam for Weapons of Mass Destruction that he did not have? I could site a lot more examples of US warmongering. Putin has he reasons for going into the Ukraine and his reasons are at least as good as ours were for the above examples I sited. Ukraine is a very corrupt nation full of real honest to G*d Nazis and Zelensky is a crook.
