If struggling Disney had any hopes of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny breaking even at the box office, those hopes were dashed this weekend, as the fifth and final Harrison Ford swashbuckler fell to second place in the U.S. and Canada after just one week.
According to Variety, Patrick Wilson’s fifth installment in the Insidious series knocked Indiana Jones off the top spot with a $32.6 million debut on 3,188 screens. Dial of Destiny earned just $26.5 million on 4,600 screens.
Do the math: Indy earned about $5,760 per screen while Insidious: The Red Door did nearly double that at $10,226.
That’s a lot of empty seats for an Indiana Jones movie in its second week in theaters.
Indy cost $300 million to produce, not including an additional $150 million in marketing expenses, and it isn’t likely to break even, even after video sales. Disney won’t be able to recoup any costs on streaming sales, either, since their own properties stream exclusively on the studio’s multi-billion-dollar-losing Disney+ streamer. Dial of Destiny had been expected to lose somewhere between $200-$250 million before its massive, second-week 56% box office decline. In contrast, last year’s Top Gun: Maverick mega-hit fell off just 33% in its second week.

Get woke, go broke.
Didn’t know that Henry “Indiana” Jones Jr. had a Barack Obama.
This ‘movie’ is an absolute disgrace.
Isaiah 3:12 ESV / 21
My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths.
Get old, feel the cold. The energy and lightness of the original formula from this franchise has run its course. Nobody wants to watch an action film about a bitter, broken old man. As John Lennon famously sang, nobody loves you when you’re old and gray.
"Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny"
I wonder if they could have found a woman with less sex appeal in all of Hollywood…
I decided not to watch it because I do not want to see woke bitches ruin the franchise.
Well, I was done with Indiana Jones after the very first one.
Yellowstone “conservatives” doubtless flocked to the theaters to see.
Sound of Freedom beat Indy in $/screen at $6,388.
yes, there are many many “conservatives” that will go out and support this leftist woke trash.
same folks that subscribe to obama netflix and Disney+
Lucas and Spielberg should have been making Indiana Jones films every two or three years. There's no reason why this franchise had to have only five entries over the course of forty-some years. Unfortunately it was next to impossible to get Lucas to decide on a MacGuffin for these stories.
It was as good, and as corny as all of the Indiana Jones movies were. And we really didn't see any "woke" aspect to the movie.
Sure, there was a strong female co-lead who turns out to be Indy's god daughter, but there was strong female co-lead in every Indiana Jones movie, especially Marion in the first movie.
There was no preachiness about it. No "women can be just as competent as men in archaeology" moments.
So I apologize for supporting Disney, but this movie specifically wasn't 'woke' to me. (Tickets were $6, and the popcorn was $5, so it's a good place to catch a movie on the cheap...)
On independence day, Sound of Freedom won!
Disney has managed to become toxic with everything it touches. They destroyed the Star Wars franchise and now this. A far cry from past days when everything they did turned to gold.
My college roommate/ fraternity brother/ normie “conservative” is one of. He was bragging about how great the film would be. When I asked him repeatedly about he demurred, finally saying “plot could have been really good but action scenes were preposterous”, which is awfully faint praise. The next film he is looking forward to is the predictive programming of Oppenheimer.
Anheuser-Busch & Disney should team up together, they are on the same path. Curious though, why wasn’t Dylan Mulvaney cast as the leading woman? Mulvaney has all the attributes of a young male.
They made Luke Skywalker a bitter and broken old man in the Last Jedi. That one killed Star Wars forever for me. So they went and did that for Indy too? Well there was never any chance I would go see this since the Crystal Skull killed Indy for me way back.
