The stories are everywhere: Walmart store closures in Portland and Chicago; an epidemic of drug store thefts in New York. In Baltimore, a “landmark” grocery store shuts its doors after nearly 25 years in a community desperate for fresh food.
While in San Francisco, reports of big-box chains abandoning its downtown have become near-daily occurrences.
The cause: rampant, often organized, and seemingly consequenceless shoplifting.
Indeed, the US is deep in what many are calling an epidemic of thefts that cost retailers nearly $100 billion in 2021.
And this epidemic is impacting both the bottom lines and operational strategies of massive companies ranging from Macy’s to Ulta.

Looks like large cities will be becoming Big Box deserts if their losses continue from stealth. The Walmarts of the country will confine themselves to suburbs and country areas and close their loss centers in the large cities who will have to make do with Amazon.
> We stand in the checkout line and PAY. <
I’m guessing that this rampant shoplifting has a domino effect. Some poor slob is waiting in line to pay. He doesn’t have much money, and perhaps not the strongest moral compass.
He sees people just walking out of the store without paying. So maybe this poor slob decides to do the same thing next time.
Johnson tried that in the Great Society. They were called the Job Corps Conservation Centers. They recruited kids, many from urban areas, and flew them to remote camps run by the Forest Service and National Parks. So many of inductees freaked out immediately and demanded to go home they would't enroll them for the first month. That way congress never would find out about the 50+ percent that never even got signed in. Those that stayed had some hard times. The big city kids formed gangs and preyed on the poor rural kids. The forrest rangers who ran the camps got an education.
We are so screwed as a country. Once the left enact their asinine policies like allowing $1000 day thefts, thr left would riot if anyone tried to make all theft illegal again. Once reparations are started, it will. Be Impossible to get all the “gimmedats” off of demanding more and more in “reparations”
The rest of us get to pay that $100B bill.
Portland; Chicago; New York; Baltimore; and San Francisco
Is there a common denominator here? I can’t quite figure it out.
All by design.
The reason democrat hellholes raised the amounts people could steal before it became a felony was because corrupt mayors didn’t want their cities to look like the hellholes they really are.
Democrat mayors compete for companies - new jobs - and an expanded taxpayer base. Companies don’t want to move to criminal hellholes because it makes it harder for them to recruit the talent they need.
So mayors LIE about their crime statistics. The only honest crime number out of a democrat city is the murder rate. That can’t be changed.
A solution is for the corrupt FBI to standardize crime statistics.
[[So mayors LIE about their crime statistics]]
Yep- so true- and folks that live there and suffer loss know it is lies, but keep voting the corrupt mayors in
And, somehow, Wall Street overlooks this and the markets continue upward. Wow...what a rigged system.
USA is taken over by marxist thugs.
Liberals believe everything belongs to government and whatever people earn and get to keep even after taxes is a form of theft and unfair tax loop hole.
DNC believes income equality can only be achieved if government owns everything, and takes everything people earn, and than distribute it back to people as flat monthly sum.
DNC voters believe people owe everything they have to Blacks as a form of reparation. In absence of government sponsored reparations, Robbery, burglry, looting, theft and stealing are legitimate forms of claiming their fair share of reparations. They are not real crimes and will be decriminalized.
Why left is so arrogant? Because it can. It has found magic pill to win elections - so no more incremental power grab.
True but it would eliminate any possibility of:
“Did I do wrong?”
It started since the criminal George Floyd died in 2020, and liberals decided to allow low IQ citizens to run rampant after that.
Shoulda picked our own damn cotton.
Is it costing retailers 100B in lost sales or lost sales plus “anti theft tech” and how much is it costing consumers because it’s going to be more than that 100B?
Simple solution; make shop owners arm themselves and let them start blasting thieves.
Its online too. Plenty of scams being done online.
And, this is the response that will make Amazon even stronger. For Rx, the mailin pharms.
If I have to call on a store stock person to get something for me, I walk out and go elsewhere. Go ahead, go bankrupt. You are nothing to me if I cannot inspect your merchandise and you make me check out my own selections.
Bricks&morter stores need to abandon cowardice. Hire some lawyers to sue the cites for no law enforcement. Hire others to go after thieves.
For too long companies have made themselves weak by believing inhouse lawyers who don’t want to get off their fat butts and fight.
Shoplifting is theft, so why can’t it prosecuted as theft? Any thing less is just passing the penalties on to the paying customers. Back in the old days, it’s my understanding that(depending on what was stolen) that the solution for this was an automatic hanging. The hanging may or may not have been preceded by a trial.
I'm not so sure about the murder rate thing. Jackson, Mississippi should be eclipsing some other hellholes like New Orleans, but the city doesn't report those stats - so it's excluded from the lists of murderdeathkill cities.
