The shoplifting epidemic taking over America with a $100B annual price tag
NYPost ^ | 7/1/23 | Jared Klickstein

Posted on 07/01/2023 7:00:14 AM PDT by CFW

The stories are everywhere: Walmart store closures in Portland and Chicago; an epidemic of drug store thefts in New York. In Baltimore, a “landmark” grocery store shuts its doors after nearly 25 years in a community desperate for fresh food.

While in San Francisco, reports of big-box chains abandoning its downtown have become near-daily occurrences.

The cause: rampant, often organized, and seemingly consequenceless shoplifting.

Indeed, the US is deep in what many are calling an epidemic of thefts that cost retailers nearly $100 billion in 2021.

And this epidemic is impacting both the bottom lines and operational strategies of massive companies ranging from Macy’s to Ulta.

They used to hang horse thieves. Perhaps that hanging ought to come back in style.

Deceased seldom steal again.

In tandem, prosecutorial leniency, and no-cash bail must be abolished if we’re to have any chance of returning to a system where products are actually purchased, rather than pilfered.”

I remember the 90s when I was teaching Intro to Ethics to nurse wannabes, and one of the common complaints of the Left was the vast numbers of people we had in prison, more by percentage than any other civilized society. How immorally racist it was to incarcerate so many blacksandhispanics (incarcerating rednecks was just fine)! Those of us who were red-pilled would point out how both crime and drug use were declining, how cities were becoming habitable again for people of all colors and races. Didn't matter. So now we have Leftopia, where crime and drug use are skyrocketing, and cities have become uninhabitable for people of all colors and races. Kyrie eleison.

I would like to see what shoplifting was, say five years ago. Did it go from $10 billion to $100 billion, or $80 billion to $100 billion? Also, what is the increase in California and New York versus Mississippi and North Dakota?

The only so,union is to raise the amount of “allowed theft” from $1000 per theft to $10,000 per theft. That’ll stop all the theft /s

And, since according to white liberal 'elite' bimbos 'theft' is a cry for help - maybe we should give all the thieves an extra $2,000 a month to raise their self esteem. It worked with 'the homeless' right?

“Warn a thief once”

No warnings. Raiders know they are raiding.

Liberals will never admit their mistakes. To the contrary. They will double down wherever possible. So I see little chance of these cities fixing themselves.

This would leave a store with only two options. Shut down, or embrace the ‘Service Merchandise’ model. Put catalogues at the front of the store. A customer orders something from the catalog, and pays for it. A worker in a secure stockroom gets the item, and puts it on a conveyor belt for the customer to retrieve.

Easy, eh? But I’m rather sure neighborhood activists will scream racism or disrespect or whatever. Sigh. I guess nothing is perfect.

The people who are doing the stealing aren’t going to give it up if the criminal penalties are restored. They like the free things given to them by the democrats and are not going to become law-abiding citizens any time soon.

What about us? We stand in the checkout line and PAY. We pay in higher prices as well. We deserve reparations big time.

I’ve said it before - we need FDR style CCC camps - far out in the country

How about “Project Siberia” ??

Build camps in middle of Alaska wilderness, sentence miscreants there Probably dont even need fences - its miles of nothing to nearest town

Once word gets out the camps in middle of nowhere should have desired effect

Thank you for referencing that article CFW.

"The shoplifting epidemic taking over America with a $100B annual price tag"

The real problem is this imo.

As a consequence of ordinary qualified, but constitutionally low-information citizen voters abusing their 17th Amendment power by cluelessly electing crooks to the federal Senate, the corrupt, constitutionally undefined political parties who have consequently been able to pirate control of the federal government are unsurprisingly not doing their constitutionally enumerated jobs to make sure that likewise corrupt state governments are guaranteeing the people the republican form of government that they are paying for. (Are we having fun yet?)

"Article IV, Section 4: The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government [emphasis added], and against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence."

Regarding 2024 elections, it's up to Democratic and Republican pro-Trump MAGA patriots to initiate the final stage of Trump 47's second term mission to finish draining the swamp by primarying as many of our beloved state and federal lawmakers and executives as we can.

After all, lawmakers and executives continue to show that they do not have the patriotism and leadership skills necessary to find legislative support for effective remedies for unconstitutional government policies.

In fact, given that one of the very few powers that the states have expressly constitutionally given to the unconstitutionally big federal government to dictate domestic policy is to run the Mail Service (most federal domestic policy actually based on stolen state powers), the worst problem that the peacetime country would otherwise be looking at with a new Congress of freshman lawmakers is a delay with mail delivery.

"Article I, Section 8, Clause 7: To establish Post Offices and post Roads;"

Trump can endorse candidates that Constitution-savvy patriots recommend as long as candidates are not incumbents, candidates also promising to repeal the 16th (direct taxes) and 17th (popular voting for federal senators) Amendments after they win office.

The definition of insanity is reelecting your beloved career state and federal lawmakers and executives over and over again, expecting those same politicians to find remedies for unconstitutional government policies every time.

Just shoplift a couple of hundred worth of stuff you can resell to make student loan payments.

Yep, there is one group of people that is responsible for probably 75% of the theft.

I’m always amazed that libs think that involuntary commitment to mental health hospitals is “inhumane” yet it is just fine to have the same people living in the most abject squalor on the streets, no care, horrible diet, constant drug use, high death rate, and frequent robbery and thieving.

Your solutions are exactly what is needed. I would add that the long-term fix is to change education and that would teach children civics, health, responsibility, and virtue. That would require abolishing teachers’ unions.

But there is zero appetite among our politicians for any of these common-sense fixes. The libs and homeless/education/government complexes are way too big and powerful.

I wonder what will have to be added to prices of everything to build and staff such a system. Quite a bit, I’d bet.

I favor a third option, that of placing shoplifters’ heads on stakes outside the store.

Be careful what you wish for. It wouldn't be long until those camps were inhabited entirely by conservatives.
