Paid? He’s been marked for death. Putin has tried to have him killed several times. It’s what he does to keep his underlings, civilian and military, in line. Prigozhin can’t even go into exile without risking assassination by Putin or being arrested as a war criminal and spending the rest of his time in prison. So he’s making a play for the throne.
And they’re not really mercenaries. They’ve only really fought under the Russian flag, at Putin’s behest.

Prigozhin has never been a true mercenary. He is closer to what the IRGC is - formally not official so they can skirt some rules, but still a state structure.
