Give my regards to Broadway!
Remember me to Herald Square!
Tell all the gang at Forty Second Street
That I will soon be there!
—written by George M. Cohan for his musical play Little Johnny Jones which debuted in 1904 in New York.
My own added lyric:
With my Kevlar vest,
Metal helmet
and my new sap gloves
I’ll carry my fat bear spray
and a trusty .45
I’ll be moving slowly
but I intend to stay alive.
Good one. I have a soft spot for old musicals….not that there’s anything wrong with that.
That’s what I thought of too.
Remember me to Herald Square.
They say you shouldn’t walk at night on Broadway
They say there’s always pot smoke in the air
When you’re walking down that street
And a recent parolee you meet
Kicks you repeatedly in the derriere
They say that I’m too pale to walk on Broadway
I need to check my privilege, they all say
But they’re dead wrong, I know they are
‘Cause I carry this here Sig Sauer
And my high cap mag won’t quit til I’m clear
of Broadway
So that’s why Susan Walker (I had to look up the character’s name) wanted out of the neighborhood.
Metal helmet
and my new sap gloves
I’ll carry my fat bear spray
and a trusty .45
I’ll be moving slowly
but I intend to stay alive."
That would almost work to "The Trolley Song" from "Meet Me in St. Louis."
All you’re missing is a boston leather slap jack.
