Trump and DeSantis Are on a Mission to Destroy the Civil Service
Intelligencer via MSN ^ | 15 Jun 23 | Ed Kilgore

It’s not terribly surprising that Donald Trump wants to tear that system down. His idol, after all, is Andrew Jackson, who championed the “spoils system” as a populist revolt against the emergence of a cadre of professional administrators who remained in federal offices for multiple administrations. But for all his talk of “clearing the swamp” and replacing “deep state” civil servants with his own loyal supporters, Trump didn’t make destruction of the civil-service system a key first-term priority. It wasn’t until October 2020 that he issued an executive order creating a new Schedule F classification of political appointees to include most policymaking positions in the higher levels of the bureaucracy. Like a lot of alarming things Trump proposed, Schedule F didn’t get implemented, and Joe Biden quickly revoked the executive order and restored the traditional civil service.

--snip--

Like Trump, DeSantis believes that federal law-enforcement agencies are abusing power systematically whenever they get in the way of conservative policy initiatives or prosecute Republican officeholders. So his makeover plan will focus on decapitating the FBI and the Department of Justice generally, according to Philip Wegmann of RealClearPolitics:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been working for months on plans to tear down and rebuild both the Department of Justice and the FBI, consulting with experts and members of Congress to develop a “Day One” strategy to end what conservatives see as the weaponization of the justice system.

The governor has privately told advisors that he will hire and fire plenty of federal personnel, reorganize entire agencies, and execute a “disciplined” and “relentless” strategy to restore the Justice Department to a mission more in line with what the “Founding Fathers envisioned.”

And?

Is there a problem with that?

What a load of crap “history”-—there never WAS a “professional group” of career govt. servants— What there WAS and still is in a now fully organized UNIONIZED un-fireable 100,000 + fedgov permanent employees/ and the Carter created so called Senior Executive Service (a built in wall of demonrat party loyalist whose goal has always been to control and stifle any new administration).

The original Civil Service which was honorable, actionable as to performance and pay and NEVER to be unionized (for that matter ANY govt. agency employee should NOT be unionized nor have LOBBYISTS to increase their numbers and payroll- as a POLITICAL group)— was by layers warped into the corruptocrats installed today. There are some few conservative true public servants who should be recognized and honored- because they really were. But one look at upper levels of many/most agencies and their 99% demonrat political actions— even while on the job and USING federal money from their ever increasing budgets- the problem is an Executive management textbook case right out of Harvard Business school or Wharton School of Business.

This article is a political screed blaming Andrew Jackson (who also got rid of the “BANK”- the 2nd National Bank private bank trying to ruin US Currency the responsibility of Congress— direct to the People) for something he did not do- except insert his own populism and cronies. The Civil Service later did not do anything different- actually codified and worse.

Civil SERVANTS. Not. Just a bunch of time clock watching, pension hoping drones. That’s why everyone who has become dependant on government money hates Trump. He wants to make the government run efficiently. Not like a personal slush fund for the workers. Sure, there are many truly dedicated government workers. I salute them. But the rest....unnecessary “make work” project.

I don't think that even a mild trimming of the federal work force will happen. Some attrition here and there, but that's about it. I don't see any agency being dismantled. There's a reason why they are called the otherwise unemployable.

I certainly agree.

But this time we have extenuating circumstances. The country will soon be past the point of no return if we don't use every weapon at our disposal.

The Civil Service is destroying itself by being partisan.
If it is destroyed it has no one to blame but themselves.

Unfortunately, a modern nation needs an apolitical civil service. How you keep it that way is the challenge.

From the actions of our so-called “Civil Servants”, I think that the total mess deserves complete and total destruction.

Schedule F is a correct, legal re-organization to reduce the vast size of the “eating out the substance” govt. busybodies and incompetents and more to the point— grifters and nepotists of every stripe. We’re talking 100’s of billions of poly-TICKs of fedgov padded agencies and sub organizationns. And don’t forget many if not most of these “enforcers” of what Harry Reid laughingly described as the “voluntary” Federal Income Tax system- many of these are double dipped or at the worst sit at home keyboard punching form filers who are paid 100K a year plus all benefits- gained by union lobbying of Congress. Just putting them into a federal “contractor” off the books status will not do— they have to be culled.

Schedule F is correct legal way to do this, and scares the hell out of fat, dumb Sisyphean -like (not truly as their “labor” is continuously renewed, never removed and always costing the Public more every fiscal year) sinecure holders of the People’s long ago lost trust. Period.

The jokers that posted this through microsoftnbc media overlords— they are the ones to make this effort fail every time the stone is rolled up to the top to be rolled off:

The civil service system was ruined by public unions.

“Many see civil service as an easy job with the ultimate in job security, great benefits, where with a garbage degree in sociology or divinity (as long as it’s some bachelors) and low productivity you can bring in an excellent salary for as long as you have a pulse.”

You described most of the so called civil service people in most states, counties, and cities’.

Due to a computer foul up, some of our bills were over paid not under paid. I was pleasantly surprised at the help I got at the city and county level from young workers, maybe in their late 20’s/early 30’s.

Our main post office continues to be manned by rectums, and the actual mail delivery people work hard and do a good job.

I avoid the main post office and use Office Depot’s little po and for post office jobs.

DMV is the worse. For a while our local one had a great black lady as the local director. The current one should be in charge of a prison cell block for serial killers not normal people.

It worked reasonably well up to the 1960s-1970s. Then creeping unionization (JFK’s EO & LBJ codified it into law with legislation!) and it’s been downhill ever since.

DeSantis has never actually done anything to destroy the civil service has he?
I do not remember this during his time in DC.

Ironically or perhaps just window dressing— FDR has a fireside chat/radio broadcast stating that NO government employee should be allowed to unionize— to put the government, the People in the position of having employees with collective bargaining over their Congressionally decided pay benefits etc. paid and guaranteed already.... for life.

FDR— the creator of this vast bloc of permanent “democracy” mob of PAID by the Citizens.... “employees” who have taken on regulatory actions enforced as “law” example— the “mask wearing”,,, “law” recordings heard on public transport ticketing sites— like Amtrak for example... there was no “LAW” they made regulations into “laws”, and still do or try to- where the only relief is through the courts which perpetuates the “cost” of “process” crimes which are not crimes at all (as there are no laws to be proven violated).
