> Hungary is Russia’s friend and ally <
That’s a wild exaggeration. I’m of Hungarian descent, so I’m not just a casual observer. They’re all gone now, but at one time I had relatives who still lived in the old country. And here’s something I’m sure of. Older Hungarians hate the Russians. Younger ones are deeply suspicious of them. Politicians included.
Ah, but here’s the problem. Hungary is a member of NATO. But it is also an energy-poor nation, and is dependent on Russia for natural gas. So Hungary must walk a tightrope.
The bottom line: Within the boundaries of treaties, Viktor Orbán does what’s best for his country. He will not harm his own country just to make a point. He acts exactly like Trump did.
I am half-Hungarian and go there often. Most everyone hates the Russians and does not trust them. They were in a panic when this war started, fearing Russia would cross the Hungarian-Ukrainian border. The Hungarian military has been on full alert and training in case things escalate.
Hungary does look out for itself. It does not allow the EU or US to bully it. It is disgusting how some use leftwing talking points against a nation looking out for its own best interests.
I don’t think it is gas that’s driving Orbans stance. His party has been promoting an irredentist movement for a greater Hungary. Plus I am pretty sure Putin has something on him.
