“Abdelmasih” means “Slave of Christ.” …Not exactly. Al Masih can be a transliteration of Messiah, but it also has other meanings in Arabic besides “anointed one” (transliterated), such as “the traveler” or “the one who heals by caressing”; it’s also used in a more sinister context in Al Masih ad-Dajjal, a figure akin to the devil incarnate. The true cognate word meaning “anoint” in Arabic would be mamsuah.
In Syrian-Lebanese Orthodox Christianity Jesus the Messiah is always “Al Masih”.
