Forest fires in Alberta, Canada, have fueled the annual reports of wildfires driven out of control by climate change, even though there’s no upward trend in acreage burned. An ecologist says wildfires are driven more by management practices and weather patterns.
In the early 1900s, the U.S. started practicing fire suppression throughout the West. This was driven in part by trying to protect timber commodities, and as more people moved into forested areas, they were trying to protect their property. Around the 1970s, Steele said, people began to realize that by suppressing fires, they were allowing dead trees, grasses and other fuels to accumulate. As a result, fires, when they happen, burn hotter and larger.

As noted in this piece about “weather” in the PA/NJ area:

““We are already seeing one of the worst wildfire seasons on record, and we must prepare for a long summer,” said Steven Guilbeault, Canada’s minister of environment and climate change, at a press conference.”
Sounds like the minister isn’t doing his job very well. 😉
Or maybe it’s arson.
Not mutually exclusive
Thanks for posting the other side of the official narrative (other posts parrot the ‘woe is me’ tack re fires/smoke).
>100 years of Smokey the Bear propaganda etc. and few can admit that it’s affected them.
Still, my reaction to the post remains “Duh.”
My wife is an Albertan from Grande Prairie. Her father worked in a saw mill for Weyerhauser. She saw first hand that forest management WORKS. Weyerhauser plants six trees for every one cut. They are NOT interested in running out of product. Unmanaged old-growth means that natural will clear out the hard way.
There were wildfires before we even stole America from the Indians. It’s called nature.
Weyerhaeuser’s Drayton Valley, AB plant was shut down for a couple weeks in May because the whole town was evacuated due to a forest fire encroaching the town.
A week ago there were fires in Nova Scotia.
Now there are fires in northern Quebec. We heard this morning that Chibougamau was evacuated.
This is a much earlier than normal fire season. Typically, forest fires do not happen in Canada or the Pacific Northwest until July, August or September. After the heat of the summer dries everything out that grew in the spring.
Out here in the mountains of western Maryland it was in the high 30s this morning, 6/7, almost summer.
In just read that the fires in Alberta were caused by arson, not natural events.
“ In just read that the fires in Alberta were caused by arson, not natural events.”
It could have been natural arson, you never know.
Old growth forests are at greatest risk of wildfire, and they’re one of the bunny-hugger’s most sacred of cows.
Tree-worshipers also are responsible for extremist “environmental” legislation that takes a dim view of firebreaks.
Add unmanaged old growth to unmaintained fire breaks and you’ve got a recipe for massive wildfires (just ask the Mexifornians).
It’s either arson, lightning, or power line screw ups.
Not climate change.
Meanwhile. There is no climate. Change insurance
Greta must have made that call.
It could have been natural arson, you never know.
….
Trudeau would say that.
