Wagner boss rubbishes Russian claims of Ukrainian casualties

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin dismissed Russia's claims to have inflicted heavy losses on Ukraine in the Donbas when Kyiv attempted offensive action.

Prigozhin said the claims were "simply wild and absurd science fiction".

But Russia's defence ministry doubled down on the claims on Tuesday, saying Ukraine suffered over 3,700 casualties.

Speaking to state media, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu insisted that his forces had inflicted over 3,715 casualties on Ukraine during the attack and destroyed dozens of pieces of military equipment.

"The attempts at an offensive have failed. The enemy has been halted. Russian soldiers and officers displayed courage and heroism in the battles," Mr Shoigu said, adding that 71 Russian troops died in the fighting.

However, Prigozhin was quick to hit out at the defence ministry's claims on Monday evening, saying the claims of a huge success would amount to a "massacre".

"Therefore, I think that these are just some wild fantasies," he wrote on Telegram. He also accused Russian forces of "slowly" withdrawing from the village of Berkhivka on the outskirts of Bakhmut, calling it a "disgrace".

Moscow rejected Prigozhin's claims in a statement on Tuesday. It said his allegations did "not correspond to reality" and insisted that the suburb remained under Moscow's control.

“Mr Shoigu said, adding that 71 Russian troops died in the fighting”

Yeah, 71 dead while inflicting over 3,700 casualties isn’t even approaching the borders of believability. Maybe if we are talking British infantrymen fighting Zulus armed with spears, but not two modern armies facing each other.

Read the dispatches that Julius Caesar sent home to Rome when he was fighting in Gaul.

Long range stand off missiles, massive artillery, air support supports the Russian claims…. Available video footage paints the same picture.

Sorry, but it is still not even approaching believability, as the Ukrainians are also armed with those same kinds of weapons.

https://www.moonofalabama.org/2023/06/nova-kakhova-dam-breach.html#more

Quoting the above Washington Post piece Andrew Korybko points to a possible motive for today's demolishing of the dam:

"[Kovalchuk's] remark about how “the step remained a last resort” is pertinent to recall at present considering that the first phase of Kiev’s NATO-backed counteroffensive completely failed on Monday according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. Just like Ukraine launched its proxy invasion of Russia in late May to distract from its loss in the Battle of Artyomovsk, so too might does it seem to have gone through with Kovalchuk’s planned war crime to distract from this most recent embarrassment as well."

The most recent embarrassment was the failure of yesterday's attack near Novodarovka and Levadnoye. As the Russian Ministry of Defense noted in a special statement:

"As a result of active and self-sacrificing actions of the Vostok Group of Forces, which displayed courage and heroism, the enemy has been stopped, and the set tasks haven’t been achieved. The AFU formations and military units suffered significant losses.

Total AFU losses in South Donetsk direction were over 1,500 Ukrainian servicemen, 28 tanks, including FRG-manufactured 8 Leopard tanks, three French-manufactured AMX-10 wheeled tanks, and 109 armoured fighting vehicles."
