What exactly is the ‘religious aspect’ of the conservative movement? I thought it was a movement of political philosophy, and didn’t know that it was a religious movement.

I’m confident that Trump believes in a ‘supreme being’, and ‘higher power’. But the conservative movement includes people who follow many different religions - and includes atheists, as well. Those who comprise conservatism possess many different viewpoints, and there are also many gradations among us in terms of how we consider various issues.

Even an atheist can believe in religious freedom and the right of people to worship as they please.

There is a high correlation between religious belief and conservatism. Conservatism in the U.S. will not survive if Christianity doesn’t. That wasn’t the point of my argument anyway.

The point was that I get the impression that Trump is not exactly comfortable with the religious right. Even if it is justified, it puts him in a position of having to be insincere since within the Republican party it forms the largest single constituency.
