Poll: Most Republicans Say Trump Has Better Chance than DeSantis to Win 2024 General Election

Most Republicans believe former President Donald Trump has a better chance of winning the 2024 general election than Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), a recent survey from The Economist/YouGov found.

The survey, taken May 20-23, 2023, prior to DeSantis formally announcing his 2024 presidential bid, asked respondents, “Which of these two Republicans do you think has the best chance of winning the 2024 general election for president?” The choices were either Trump or DeSantis.

Overall, a plurality, 40 percent, said Trump has the best chance of the two to win the general election in 2024.

Twenty-eight percent said the same for DeSantis, and nearly one-third, 32 percent, said they remain unsure.

More specifically, Republicans remain more confident in Trump’s ability to defeat the Democrat — presumably President Joe Biden — in 2024. According to the survey, 58 percent of Republicans have the most confidence that Trump can win, compared to 27 percent who said the same of DeSantis and 15 percent who remain unsure.

FILE - This combination of Sept. 29, 2020, file photos shows President Donald Trump, left, and former Vice President Joe Biden during the first presidential debate at Case Western University and Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Notably, Trump has the edge among independents and Democrats as well, as 32 percent of independents chose Trump, compared to 27 percent who chose DeSantis. However, 41 percent remain unsure. Thirty-one percent of Democrats also chose Trump as the individual who they believe had a better chance of winning, compared to 29 percent who said DeSantis. Forty percent of Democrats also remain uncertain.

The survey came ahead of DeSantis formally announcing his 2024 presidential bid during a conversation with Elon Musk on Twitter Wednesday — a move Breitbart News confirmed

“Most republicans” thought there was going to be a huge red wave last fall.

Boy, were they shocked.

Trump isn’t likely to carry GA or Ohio again.

He isn’t going to win the electoral college. Period.

Trump won Ohio in 2020 by a bigger margin than he did in 2016.

Is Trump now less popular there?

I’m glad DeSantis is running even though I believe Trump will easily beat him in the primaries.

By running now he gains experience in the process and what to expect in 2028. That kind of experience is invaluable. Plus he gains more name recognition among the masses. Going forward he can also be introduced as a presidential ‘contender’ for 2024. All kinds of ways to spin that one, good and bad.

He’s introducing himself now while getting folks used to the idea of him as President.

From his perspective this is a win, win, win even if/and or when he loses.

I thinks is clear no one wants Biden running things. But the thing is, Trump can’t beat him where it counts. Just like last time, people will vote against Trump…not for Biden. There are not enough people willing to vote for him.

hope they are not counting PA. Trump will lose by about 8 points. Abortion will again be the force that motivates the opposition. And even if the republican is pro choice or moderates their abortion views, they will still lose. As did Katy Ford.

DeSantis supporters have no proof that Rob can win. They feel that he can though and that’s proof enough in their minds.

Trump is able to get a lot of cross-over independent voters who would not vote for a humorless scold who worships the donor class. He’s called the blue-collar billionaire for a reason. Republican donors hate Trump and love DeSantis because Meatball does whatever they say.

If Trump, the only President to increase his bit totals by nearly 20% in his Re election bid since FDR, when they were elected in a 2 way race can’t win, no Republican can

Obama couldn’t do that, Clinton couldn’t do that, Bush couldn’t do that. Hell even Reagan couldn’t do that and his first race was a 3 way race.

Anyone thinking Trump can’t win, but Desantis can, lives among the same lot that told everyone OZ could win.

And they suddenly appeared out of nowhere.. with little money.. to become President. And by the end of their 2 terms they owned multiple mansions and millions of dollars.
