Defying a last-minute appeal by former President Donald Trump, the Texas House voted overwhelmingly Saturday to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton, temporarily removing him from office over allegations of misconduct that included bribery and abuse of office.
The vote to adopt the 20 articles of impeachment was 121-23.
The stunning vote came two days after an investigative committee unveiled the articles — and two days before the close of a biennial legislative session that saw significant right-wing victories, including a ban on transgender health care for minors and new restrictions on public universities' diversity efforts.
The vote revealed substantial divisions within the Texas Republican Party — the largest, richest and most powerful state GOP party in the United States. Although the party has won every statewide election for a quarter-century and has controlled both houses of the Legislature since 2003, it has deep underlying fissures, many of them exacerbated by Trump’s rise.
Few attorneys general have been as prominent as Paxton, who made a career of suing the Obama and Biden administrations. One of Trump’s closest allies in Texas, along with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Paxton unsuccessfully sued to challenge the 2020 presidential election results in four states.
Attention next shifts to the Texas Senate, which will conduct a trial with senators acting as jurors and designated House members presenting their case as impeachment managers.
Permanently removing Paxton from office and barring him from holding future elected office in Texas would require the support of two-thirds of senators.
Impeachment was supported by 60 Republicans, including Speaker Dade Phelan. All votes in opposition came from Republicans

Now entering, George P Bush.
Attorney general, then governor, then president? Another Bush……….
If you look at the folks behind this charade, you will find that they are NOT conservative, except maybe one, and only barely. He seems half-dead. I can’t recall his name at the moment.
What I recall of Phelan, is he is untrustworthy.
Hoping the TX Senate will send this back to the House with truth to defend.
The left/evil is having late night parties thinking up evil things to throw at us. We are shooting them down for the most part but they are relentless at their evil plot to take America down and hand it to Satan. Then...the heat begins!
RINOs are taking it back and they are every bit as awful as a RAT.
I was ripped off by a gold company in Texas. The guy running the place absconded with millions in cash and bullion. He screwed me out of $7,000 and I was not a major victim in the case.
This AG cut a sweetheart deal with the guy. I ended up getting $240 back.
Turned out the crook was a major contributor to Paxton’s PAC
I am thrilled he is getting the boot.
This is all about flipping Texas In 202;
You should have invested in an oil deal. All the gold is in California in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in somebody else’s name.
It is time for all Texans, and all Americans to stand behind Ken Paxton, and fight for the attorney general who has proven himself to be the embodiment of integrity, and Texas conservatism. Ken Paxton has been there for conservatism and President Trump. Ken Paxton fights day and night for Texas conservatives and is under attack from Democrats from across the country.
The Democrats may stand in his way and obstruct, but in 2025 Ken Paxton will be the Attorney General of the United States of America.
Texas
I have not heard one word from the Texas governor on this.
I’ve got plenty now. It’s just this guy was in bed with the criminal.
Screw him. Humiliation is a good start.
The silence is deafening.
F*cking RINOS!
Surrrrre.
Sure you did.
I don’t believe you.
Ken Paxton reviewed the election machines and prevented their certification in Texas iirc.
He’s a hero.
A patriot.
You ?
Not so much.
I guess that’s one way to stop Texas from suing the Biden regime.
The ugly spectacle in the Texas House today confirmed the outrageous impeachment plot against me was never meant to be fair or just.
It was a politically motivated sham from the beginning.
My office made every effort to present evidence, testimony, and irrefutable facts that would have disproven the countless false statements and outright lies advanced by Speaker Dade Phelan and the Murr-Johnson panel he appointed. Unfortunately, they refused to consider anything that would interfere with their desired result.
They disregarded the law, ignored the facts, and demonstrated contempt for Texas voters.
Texas voters now know that Speaker Phelan and the corrupt politicians he controls are more focused on political retribution against conservatives than the welfare of the people.
Instead of passing critical legislation that would strengthen our border, protect our elections, or stop the Chinese Communist Party from buying up Texas land, they chose to spend the final days of the legislative session smearing me.
Phelan’s coalition of Democrats and liberal Republicans is now in lockstep with the Biden Administration, the abortion industry, anti-gun zealots, and woke corporations to sabotage my work as Attorney General, including our ongoing litigation to stop illegal immigration, uphold the rule of law, and protect the constitutional rights of every Texan.
But the people of Texas know that I have always had their back, and in return, they have always had mine. What we witnessed today is not just about me.
It is about the corrupt establishment’s eagerness to overpower the millions of Texas voters who already made their voices heard when they overwhelmingly re-elected me.
I am beyond grateful to have the support of millions of Texans who recognize that what we just witnessed is illegal, unethical, and profoundly unjust. I look forward to a quick resolution in the Texas Senate, where I have full confidence the process will be fair and just.
