Hard-line conservatives are fuming over the debt deal compromise being negotiated between Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and the White House — and they’re warning about collapsing GOP support.
Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) said he was “concerned about rumors” he was hearing about a deal that would raise the debt ceiling higher than what House Republicans proposed without getting more concessions in return...
“What I’m hearing is that they punted student loans. What I’m hearing is that they’re not engaging and making the changes necessary to the Inflation Reduction Act, which has basically got a $1.2 trillion price tag. What I’m hearing is that they’re not talking about getting rid of the IRS,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said.
Roy is underwhelmed with what he thinks might be in it.
“What I’m hearing is you got work requirements and some spending cuts,” he said. “You want to come sell that to me while also increasing the debt ceiling by another 4 trillion? … That certainly doesn’t get me excited.”
Thirty-five members of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus and their allies wrote a letter to McCarthy Thursday expressing their displeasure with where they see a deal going and suggesting that McCarthy add more demands like border security measures to debt talks — something the Speaker has previously rejected.
That letter could represent a baseline number of members who will not vote for a compromise deal.
The prevailing wisdom among Republicans is that McCarthy will have to win support of the overwhelming majority of Republicans in order to keep the support of his conference...

“The prevailing wisdom among Republicans is that McCarthy will have to win support of the overwhelming majority of Republicans in order to keep the support of his conference...”
That seems like a Captain Obvious sort of thing. Who else would support him, Democrats?
Is there anyone representing our grandkids about how we’re spending their money?
McCarthy had his shot. He’s a putz. Give the POS a no confidence vote. Guy is less visible than Biden. He wanted to be speaker so bad and then disappeared like a weasel.
Sounds like Bush Sr. lying through his lips about “read my lips, no new taxes”.
Deep State controls Congress.
As long as that’s the case, Deep State will get what Deep State wants.
I’m not surprised. Fake Drama. The Republicans are not going to save the day. It’s one party.
Just wait for the next election and they’ll tell us how they are fighting for us in the mailers they send out.
When the going gets tough
Republican leaders fold like a cheap suit.
Again.
Not quite sure what you are talking about as far as visibility but McCarthy has been front and center on the debt negotiation on a daily basis. good or bad he has been communicating every day on this for weeks.
I’m trying to catalogue all the conservative successes since Reagan was elected nearly 43 years ago. Besides Trump and his appointees to the SC resulting in the overturning of Roe v Wade (it took 50 years), I got nothing.
Meanwhile...

the GOP can NEVER be trusted.
At least the DNC/CCP is honest.
I bet it passes the house with democrats voting for it. It’ll be bipartisan. More rats than rino votes
Congress is a Harlem globetrotters game.
Democrats are the globetrotters.
I gotta agree. We have a somewhat conservative Supreme Court. That’s a win, thanks to Donald Trump. But with everything else it’s been nothing but a string of disappointments and loses.
This is going to be tough to turn around. As other posters have noted, it’s not Democrat vs. Republican. It’s Deep State (and their media lackeys) vs. decent citizens.
Our best hope is that another Reagan appears. At one time I thought that would be Sarah Palin. Then I thought it might be Trump. Unfortunately, neither of those two good people had just the right mix. So I’m still waiting.
This will be the final nail in the coffin for the GOP as it has been coming for a long time. The ‘red wave’ did not remotely materialize last year and it never will under the GOP label. Just because the rats are commies does not mean the GOPe aren’t part of it, the word/meaning “uniparty” didn’t evolve without a reason. Can’t speak for the rest of the country but here in MI the state house and the state senate were both lost for the first time in decades. No the rats aren’t taking over the majority red counties, the conservatives and conservative-leaning people just stayed home.
This is one of those cases where cure hurts more than the disease as we all know that the only way to slow down the feds is to take their money and this apparently failed as we all knew it would and we all knew it was coming sooner or later.

NO!!!! Beyond PSTUPID!! NO VOTE FOR THESE RINOS!
They just want the title, their footnote in history, and a golden sunset.
Anyone who didn’t see this coming hasn’t been paying attention.
