Bret Baier Throws Cold Water on DeSantis Run: ‘Something Has to Change Dramatically’ For Him to Win

Fox News’s Bret Baier assessed that the 2024 Republican primary will have to experience an earth-shaking development for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) to surpass former President Donald Trump.

Baier joined America Reports to react to the news that DeSantis will officially join the 2024 presidential race in an upcoming Twitter Spaces event with Elon Musk. The Special Report anchor began with a nod to Fox contributor Karl Rove, who spoke before him about how Trump currently leads the GOP — adding things could change as the race goes on.

As Baier spoke about how President Joe Biden seems to anticipate a rematch with Trump, he noted the reality that Trump still “overwhelmingly” tops DeSantis in the polls.

“Something has to change dramatically,” Baier said. “There may be events that we don’t know. There may be other legal challenges that [Trump] faces. There may be other things that happen. But there has to be a significant movement to change the dynamic. Right now former President Trump controls the environment, he controls the base, and he controls the messaging.”

Baier did acknowledge, on the other hand, that Trump has been fuming at DeSantis for months and spending money on attack ads against him.

“You don’t do that unless you consider that person a threat,” Baier said. “And tomorrow, he officially — DeSantis does — gets into this race and potentially could be a threat to the not-Trump group of candidates who are trying to be the alternative.”

You mean like Trump still taking credit for Warp Speed and being the world’s #1 Vaccine salesman?

Sometimes things change dramatically while staying the same.

In every way, this is a huge strategic error by DeSantis to run this cycle.

He should focus on 2028.

Sounds at about right - current climate simply does not favor a run for him, especially since there is more than one other opponent already running.

Vivek Ramaswamy would seem to be the alternative if Trump were to drop out or crash somehow in the current environment and not DeSantis.

Ideally DeSantis would be running now to succeed Trump in his second term.

DeSantis seemed to have so much promise. But then, undoubtedly egged on by the Roves and Bushes of the world, he’s suddenly turned into a typical self-centered politician, willing to abandon his constituents in Florida to chase after visions of personal glory. I’ve never seen anything quite like this. He’s going to be ground into powder by Trump, but the ensuing battle could end up wrecking 2024 and handing it to the dems yet again.

What an idiot.

Bret who?

I remember when Bret Baier replaced Brit Hume back in 2008 and thinking, "Wow, this guy is a total lightweight." I haven't watched Special Report since.

Whether it is trump or DeSantis, the winner better pick Scott as their Veep if they want to win the General.

Brett Baier and Karl Rove discussing Ron.

Kinda like two yard gnomes discussing a third.

Bret Baier is a Democrat, so he’ll poo-poo any Republican unless they are a Dem plant.

“. . . the 2024 Republican primary will have to experience an earth-shaking development.”

Listen to the news. Something earth-shaking is happening every news cycle. No one can even keep track.

It is so weird to me that in order for trump to win the primary neither trump nor his supporters realize he’s absolutely nuking his chances in the general. The truly weird part is if trump wins the primary and loses the general, most of his sycophant supporters around here will be happy.

Nobody turned him into a self-centered politician.

Read the guy's background and biographical profile and pretend you didn't know who he was. You'd swear you were reading about a perfect example of a "Deep State" political operative.
