Bud Light sales plunge nearly 25% in latest week as rivals steal away customers
NY post ^ | 23 may 2023 | Lisa Fickenscher

Sales of the US’s No. 1 beer were down 24.6% for the week ended May 13 compared to a year ago — slightly worse than the 23.6% dip they suffered a week earlier, according to Bump Williams Consulting and Nielson IQ research.

Even more alarming, industry experts say, is the negative impact on Anheuser-Busch InBev’s other brands, including Budweiser, Michelob Ultra — with the latter being the nation’s No. 3 beer last year with more than $3.3 billion in sales last year.

Michelob Ultra sales were off 2.9% versus a year ago in the latest week, in line with a drop a week earlier, according to a Bump Williams analysis of Nielsen IQ data. Sales of Budweiser, last year’s No. 7 beer with more than $1.8 billion in sales, were down 9.7% in each of the two most recent weeks.

“Bud Light is ‘sick,’” Bump Williams, founder of the consultancy said of the US’s top-selling beer, which raked in $4.8 billion in sales last year. “It’s now infected other healthy brands with the InBev portfolio and that’s a bigger problem in my mind.”

Bud Light has lost $110 million in sales volume year-to-date compared to the same period last year. The number of Bud Light cases sold was down 28.4% in the week ended May 13 from a year ago compared to a 27.7% decline the previous week.

It is incredible, every week is a few percentage points worse. They seem to be in a vicious cycle: more people leave, try other commodity beers or actual beer, they draw more people away, etc etc

History would seem to indicate the boycott will eventually lose steam. The right and the middle can’t hold onto the level of hatred needed to make the boycott stick. Now, when the leftists threaten, others usually capitulate. Just ask the LA Dodgers organization.

Rivals “steal away customers?” I think they drove their customers away. It is not like Bud Light is anything special...

I hosted a children’s birthday/pool party for my brothers grand son two weekends ago. Parents that brought Bud Light were mocked unmercifully for drinking “queer beer”. I just watched :)

if you ask people to go without

yeah it fizzles

but just switching brands is way easier to maintain

Ordinarily I would agree with you, except in this case, Bud Light is nothing special and when the customers go to a better beer, they won’t be back.

And what happens when people (well, mostly men) that Miller and Coors have their own issues with being woke?

I thought so too, but this may hold because the Bud light flavoured sparkling water is a commodity product with no discernible distinct characteristic that sets it apart from its competitors.

Budweiser has become a referendum on our federal government and its absurdities. No sympathy however.

I think the times are different now. The right usually have some establishment type come out and say “hey we don’t do boycotts and they don’t work anyway because we can’t boycott everyone” and the whole thing fizzles.

This time they got Trump Jr to say that but it didn’t work, because this time the voices who are rallying for it have been steadfast and given the product is basically a base consumable, like bottled water, or bread. It’s easy to switch away and maintain.

In fact that was why Bud Light was picked as the target, there are a thousand woke companies, but Bud Light was targeted because it was the one company that was most vulnerable.

You and others here could be right. Bud Light’s success may be mostly attributable to their marketing, beginning with their past Super Bowl commercials. Of course, for the 2023 Super Bowl, Anheuser-Busch chose to run their Budweiser spot in select regions such as New York, Philadelphia and California. That should have be a sign of things to come.

I’ve told my adult softball team - NO ONE is allowed to bring Budweiser or Bud Light for post-game beers.

Nothing happens. This isn’t a boycott we are seeing, it is a natural aversion to being made fun of by your friends.
