Bakhmut Citadel area has fallen to the Russians
Asia Times ^

Posted on 05/20/2023 3:57:22 AM PDT by FarCenter

The entire Bakhmut Citadel area has fallen to the Russians, and the Children’s Hospital area also has been taken.

The last part of the city remaining uncaptured is a small corner close to the Ukrainian flank operation facing Ivanjske. This area straddles an important roadway.

At this stage I don’t see much point for the Ukrainians continuing other than to evacuate any troops remaining.

...

Meanwhile Ukraine is keeping up its flank operations (north and south of Bakhmut) and the Russian army so far is not doing much about these operations. It appears the Russians now see them as diversionary.

Ukrainian propaganda is saluting the successes on the flanks and has nothing to say at all about what has happened in the city proper. This is not surprising, as they expect their line to be broadcast to the world, hiding what is really happening.

The impact on Zelensky is yet to come. He is heading out to attend the G-7 in Japan, probably to avoid repercussions at home. The official reason for his trip, to seek armaments, seems a fool’s errand.

No one is in denial about Bachmut, rather they are in amazement about what Ukraine has accomplished.

What a joke! You need to jump back on your meds!

Ukraine has not accomplished "squat." The Ruskies are fighting the whole of the US/WEST. And so far, they've captured 20% of the Uke territory -- and expanding. In fact, this is shaping up to be another major boondoggle for the US like we saw in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, etc.

In fact, the Ruskies just captured Bakmut with a rag-tag group of prisoners and malcontents. WOW! That really speaks well for your Uke friends and the US/NATO! Right? In the meantime, we stand ready to default on our debt obligations while you and Biden/Brandon send $200 billion to the clown, Zelensky. And, we can't even protect our own borders while being invaded from the south.

Smart. Real smart!

The reality is Russia does not belong in Ukraine. Period.

Neither does the illegitimate government that Nuland and her globalists cohorts put in power there in 2014.

I have a detailed answer it was ignored while you all verbally masturbate to a supposed Russian victory.

The anti Americanism and love for our enemy “Vlad” is reprehensible.

Many of the Ukies that left Ukraine simply are never going back.

The sad truth is that most of the younger Ukrainians wanted Ukraine to join the European Union long before the war, not to improve Ukraine, but so they could get their EU work cards and leave Ukraine.

Agreed. Every empire has a life span and we are certainly near the end. God knows what our kids will live through. Something will replace it, hopefully a country by the people for the people. I talk with my Russian friends and they tell me what living through the fall of their empire was like and the twenty years of chaos where there were days of real starvation and despair and the threat of having their nation carved up by the west. But from that rose the Russian Federation which was a thousand times better. Putin saved the Slavic people from the western puppets Gorbachev and Yeltsin, which is why he has an 80% approval rating.

back to that crap again, that the nation of Ukraine can be invaded because you want to claim it doesn’t really exist.

You’ll be a great help to the Mexicans when they take over.

Can you explain why capturing a small city in Ukraine after totally destroying it was worth the thousands of Russian lives and millions of dollars worth of armored vehicles that it cost?

Bakhmut was just a way for Ukraine's military to tie up the Russians and Wagner.

At this point Russia has gone from a goal of conquering Ukraine in 3 days to capturing a few more blocks of an obscure city in 3 months.

Why did Russia spend from August 2022 to May 2023 to destroy and then capture the rubble of a small city in Ukraine?

What grand strategy called for thousands of Russian men to die so they could control a lot of rubble?

We've already seen this pattern several times before.

Based on the prior patterns in a few months Ukraine will have Bakhmut back since the Russians won't be able to keep control of it. Like all the other cities, towns, villages and farms the Russians have been driven out of of.

Going to the G8 to get more support could not possibly be a “fool’s errand”.

More interesting is who is not at any of the meetings. That Russian guy who used to engage with other world leaders.

China granted overflight rights to the NATO military airplane that Zelensky is riding in, that is probably a message to Putin.

Russia has been warning NATO not to expand eastward for over 10 years, yet NATO still did it.

America's woke uniparty "leaders" have grown up in an era of total US hegemony, where sanctions, beating up on small nations, and massive debt was easy and costless.

These knew that Russia had cultural/economic "sphere of influence" (much like our own Monroe Doctrine, but actually more limited) but they simply didn't care. Russia was on its knees after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The deep-state arrogance and self-imposed institutional blindness has not allowed them to understand or accept the world has changed

If the West does get directly involved it won’t take very long for the nukes to come out and then we have a global thermonuclear war.

Nonsense. Russian generals learned last week that their best missiles get 100% shot down by third tier US missile defenses.

If Russia launches nuclear weapons they may see 100% of their missiles get shot down. And then they can try to fend off the counter attack.

They won't try their luck at that.

What page in the Russian propaganda posting manual does that talking point come from?

In case you didn't know President Zelensky was elected by the people of Ukraine in 2019.
