North Carolina lawmakers on Tuesday overrode the veto of Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper to enshrine into law a ban on most abortions in the state after 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Both chambers of the legislature have Republican supermajorities, though the governor had hoped at least one Republican lawmaker would vote to uphold his veto and traveled the state last week to convince a lawmaker to take that stance, the Associated Press reported.
The Old North State previously barred abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The new ban makes exceptions for rape, incest, medical emergencies and severe fetal anomalies. Cooper had called the measure "extreme" before he vetoed it, despite its relatively permissive regulations in comparison with other abortion bans in southern states.
In Florida, the state recently barred the procedure after six weeks of pregnancy while numerous others have almost completely eliminated it outright.
The North Carolina ban marks the latest in a series of Republican-led efforts nationwide to restrict access to abortion after the Supreme Court in 2022 overturned the constitutional right to the procedure.

Good!!!!!!!
Wait for the criticism of the Trumpsters.
12 friggen weeks and the baby killers are upset. I guess they can’t get whatever they need for their satanic rituals from a 3 month old.
I’m getting to the point that hangings aren’t as good as burnings.
Trumpster here. State did its thing following the legal procedures. Can’t imagine Trump being against that. States rights. Great thing. The great middle should be comfortable with this position. It’s a little liberal for me, but I’m at ease with it.
A reasonable reply. Kudos.
They overrode Cooper! Thank you!
YAY NC!!!
And the best thing out of it was he held a big rally and traveled the state and could not get one legislator to switch so that his veto could stand. He is unable to stir them.
Now, all that being said, I can imagine why it was hard to get this bill veto to stand— the bill is about a soft on abortion as the Democrats could hope for when the Republicans have a super-majority. I think there were some that said, If you knock this down we will outlaw it entirely with your successor.
Reason seems to be growing rarer these days. A shame. I’m often tempted into the pit of feelings in my replies to my liberal friend, and I have to stop myself and erase what I’ve written and try again, relieved that I said it once, even if it disappeared before I pressed send. At least I had the momentary pleasure of expressing my feelings without myself or my friend suffering the result of letting feelings loose. Family and friendship are roots that need great protection in these days when the country seems to have become the opposite world to the one in which we were raised, and which we tried, in our turn, to teach.
Cooper is a RAT jerk.
“Both chambers of the legislature have Republican supermajorities”
How did this demonrat get elected I wonder? Massive cheating undoubtedly.
There never has been a Constitutional right to commit abortion.
in 2022 overturned the constitutional right to the procedure the Supreme Court overruled its prior decision of Roe v. Wade that in defiance of the Constitution purported to legislate restrictions on a State's power to enact law.
Woohoo!
God Bless those republicans for taking a stand and not backing down.
Don’t avoid a good level of reliance on just pressing your lips together and composing a great and pithy reply in your head. That works almost as well as writing it down. If you’ve been eloquent enough yourself, you’ll find that you’ve used up all the emotion and can do a mental reset so that you can next find a more reasoned statement of the problem.
As a child, I wrote volumes of things that should never see the light of day. Instead, they saw the light of the gas flame and glowed brightly for a short time, burning up my feelings along with the paper.
I can’t do this well when driving. I become so absorbed in my thoughts that I get constantly lost. Luckily I’ve learned to be perfectly comfortable with not having the faintest idea where I am. I look at the positive. Even when I pass it several times in a row.
Good for them.
Exactly.
Thank you. Even conservative media routinely carelessly buy into liberal framing of issues, and this was an example
