Trump’s pledge for Ukraine peace met with doubt, derision
The Hill via Yahoo ^ | May 14th, 2023 | Brad Dress

As former President Trump solidifies his front-runner status in the Republican 2024 presidential primary race, his views on the Russia-Ukraine war paint an increasingly stark contrast with GOP leaders in Congress.

On Wednesday, he pledged to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office and refused to say which side he wants to win the war.

“When I’m president, I will have that war settled in one day, 24 hours,” Trump said in a CNN town hall Wednesday night, adding he would meet with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“They both have weaknesses and they both have strengths, and within 24 hours that war will be settled, it’ll be over.”

...snip...A survey from the Pew Research Center published this week found the number of Republicans who say the U.S. should focus on problems at home rather than paying attention to issues overseas increased to 71 percent this year from 65 percent last year.

The number of Americans who share that view overall is at 55 percent, up 4 percentage points from last year.

All the pundits and politicians speak as if those poll numbers don't matter.

That your majority opinion is irrelevant and they will continue to pursue their international agenda without regard to what you think.

War = $$$$ for the establishment. Of course they won’t like it if we’re not fighting somewhere.

For its ‘derision’ The Hill/Yahoo quote an innocuous former Senator from Arkansas, and a nobody from some New England kindergarten. I deride, therefore I am.

Such a ridiculous boast. Naive self-confidence, delusions of grandeur, lust for power, and magical thinking.

I think his idea to get the economy back under control, “Drill, baby drill”, would end the war in Ukraine even faster. If Russia loses their oil money they can’t afford to fight a war. Dropping oil below $50 would mean Putin would have to pull back his troops asap.

The Hill Via Yahoo is about as bad as it gets. A putrid rotting rodent in a cesspool is about what it is.

Perhaps, but so many of Trump’s predictions that were initially called “ridiculous” “nonsensical” and “naive” have proven to be accurate. It does give one pause.

You're on the right track with that. What Trump would do is put both sides into a bind, where they would all have to stop right where they are, and be compelled into negotiation. Right now the policy on all sides is to keep pouring gas on that fire, keep escalating. Nobody's pumping the brakes. Bring concrete consequences in and it all stalls out.

Deride and doubt at your own risk. He’s got a track record of getting things done.

“And former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) referred to Trump as “Putin’s puppet.”

“Despite how ridiculous that is to say, I suspect he would try to do it by turning Ukraine over to Putin and Russia,” Christie tweeted.”

That is EXACTLY HOW IT WOULD BE DONE.

And it’s not a ridiculous boast if there is a plausible path to making it true.

Ultimatum to Kiev.

If anyone has doubts about Trump’s ability to negotiate difficult deals, have doubts about his ability to bring peace in Ukraine, were asleep during his four years as president. The man is a miracle worker, and a tireless one at that.

"We're watching a holocaust. We're watching something that I've never seen before. [Russia] is blowing up buildings, with children, with women, with professionals, with people, just people, they're blowing up indiscriminately. They're just shooting massive missiles and rockets into these buildings and everybody is dying."

"The numbers are far worse than what you're seeing on television. I don't know if they [are] keeping them down. When you see buildings being blown up and then they say one person died? Give me a break. Many people are dying and we're allowing this to happen."

"They have to stop it and they have to stop it now, but they don't respect the United States, and the United States is not doing anything about it. This is a holocaust, this is a horrible thing that's happening and you see it on television every night."
