A California man was fired from his job as a grocery store courtesy clerk after he was assaulted three times in four months.
Austin Sherrell, 23, says he was assaulted three times since the new year and, after asking for worker’s comp, his hours were cut and then he was terminated from his position at Vons, a supermarket chain in Southern California and Nevada.
His duties as a courtesy clerk included bagging groceries, collecting shopping carts and dealing with trash, which he was doing on January 19, when he encountered two alleged shoplifters behind the store.
“I’m taking out the trash, two people are stealing, they go out the side,” Sherrell told KGET.com of the horrific encounter, where he was punched in the face by one of the thieves before his companion pepper-sprayed the defenseless employee.

I don’t need to guess who the perpetrators were at this point.
“dealing with trash”
Sue ‘em
His “major crime” being, applying for worker’s comp.
Not sure why he’s repeatedly behind the building without management oversight. Dumpsters are frequently secured because the public will dump trash. Was he where he should be and following procedure?
Seems like drama and looking for a payday. How much is Albertsons who owns Safeway who owns Vons and is trying to become owned by Kroger paying their baggers that he needs to replace $5000 in lost income to pay his bills?? Sounds like a grift.
He was pepper sprayed, almost stabbed (his words) and then fought a customer when he was supposedly getting management and security.
It’s California. It could be homeless, transients, illegal aliens, addicts, teenagers, woke liberals, pretty much anything. His stories would be more believable if he said they had on MAGA hats. /s
I always thought Von’s was cool. A supermarket where you can go and spend your grocery money playing the slots.
Yep.
While there are people who abuse it, worker's comp is there for a reason. People do get hurt on the job and it is their employers duty to make them whole. A number of years ago I was injured while working at a gas station. Two doctors told me I would need surgery to repair the damage. The company doctor disagreed. They naturally went with the opinion of the company doctor and covered only my visit to the ER. I should have gotten a lawyer and fought it but I was young, poor and certain I would heal eventually. Let's just say that I didn't. A few years later I had to bite the bullet and get the surgery done.
By that time it was way to late to file a claim.
A SHOPLIFTER IS NOT A “CUSTOMER”.
I am sure he could easily be relocated somewhere safer. Good help is hard to find.
His job?
You know, that thing that he is suppose to do?
Something that in everything but government, you generally do without management standing behind you watching your every move?
Undocumented Customer
Amazed that there are people who think this guy should be fired after being assaulted 3 times.
