GOP senators disavow Trump on debt ceiling, signaling growing rift

Senate Republicans are disavowing former President Trump’s call to let the federal government default on its debts unless President Biden agrees to “massive” spending cuts, dismissing Trump’s suggestion as something far too risky to seriously consider.

The cold reception to Trump’s bold statement is the latest sign of the widening rift between Trump and his party’s Washington establishment. While Trump maintains strong influence in the House, where he helped Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) nail down enough votes to be elected Speaker, it’s a different story in the Senate.

GOP senators largely ignored Trump’s participation in a CNN’s town hall Wednesday and later dismissed the former president’s claim that failing to raise the debt ceiling by next month’s deadline might not be a big deal.

He spent a crap load on checks to every American. Was that really wise? No! It was a direct result of inflation.

Classic walk away negotiating strategy.

The GOP senators are too dumb to understand this, though.

Hey slick, on the debt, where were the Republicans in the 40+ years prior to Trump? They ran up about 30 trillion in debt over the past 40+ years.

Where was the Republican party during all this?

after all this time people still haven’t figured out DJT negotiating style - which is a pretty basic one. he never ev-ah leads with his bottomline settlement offer but rather with the largest demand. DC of course has forgotten how deals are made, preferring to dictate rather than negotiate.

Weird. Because trump is avoiding social security math by paying people to have holdfen.. not just taxpayers or citizens, but people.
A reasonable and rational person would audit SS and get rid of the slushy payments to states for everything except retirees.

For the record, as soon as Mastercard, and the mortgage company tell me I don’t need a debt limit and that I can spend like crazy, then the government can.
Just say NO! Let Joe decide what not to pay!

“He spent a crap load on checks to every American. Was that really wise? No! It was a direct result of inflation”

It was the best stimulus in our history, it had zero impact on inflation. Our economy was drastically DEFLATED. Leave economic opinions to more knowledgeable people.
