Multnomah County voters weigh capital gains tax that would give eviction legal help

PORTLAND, Ore. — A Multnomah County measure that aims to provide free legal representation to tenants facing eviction is on the ballot next Tuesday.

The cost of living and the rising cost of rent is driving more and more Multnomah County residents into eviction court.

“Evictions are rising, the need is rising," said Colleen Carroll who is a co-coordinator for Eviction Representation for All.

The program would be funded by a 0.75% capital gains tax. Capital gains refer to any income created by the sale of an asset like stocks and bonds or real estate property.

“We chose capital gains because they are a driver of inequality in our community. Very few people pay them, and they’re taxed at a lower rate," she said.

If approved by the voters, the county would contract with at least five nonprofit law firms or community-based organizations to provide legal services. The opposing campaign, Building our Future Together, said the measure would apply a tax on everyone living in the county. U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Oregon, agreed in a campaign ad.

“It affects every Multnomah County resident regardless of ability to pay," he said.

They should spend the money on tents. That is a growth industry in Portland.

They think they should be allowed to live rent-free on someone else’s private property for life.

How soon before private property is deemed illegal in Portland, Ore.?

“...the need is rising,” said Colleen Carroll who is a co-coordinator for Eviction Representation for All.

There is ALWAYS an insatiable need for more free money.

Just what we need...yet another reason for ultra-liberal Oregonians to flee their soiled nests for (still sane) Idaho.

The “moratorium” during covid was an excuse and a justification for the eventual destruction of owners’ rights over property. It’s most obvious in communist holes like Oregon and California, but it is the ultimate goal of statists everywhere.

Little by little, they eliminate owners’ rights, and one day we wake up and voila we’re full communist.

Clearly that is not happening hence the .75 percent on stock sales. It will pass by apartment dwellers and those without stock portfolios.

One can hope.

Remember SCOTUS passed Obamacare - when everyone was sure it would never stand. Justice Roberts - after publicly stating that he was against Obamacare - changed his mind at the last minute and re-wrote his opinion in favor of it.

NWO goal is to end private property.
