Putin’s ‘one-tank’ military parade was an embarrassment for Russia, analysts say

Russia’s scaled-down Victory Day military parade showed not only Moscow’s insecurities over possible Ukrainian attacks but also highlighted the country’s depleted military resources due to the conflict, political analysts said.

May 9 is a public holiday in Russia when it commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. It is arguably the most important day in Russia’s public calendar and history, forming a central part of the country’s modern national identity.

This year’s military parade through Red Square in Moscow and celebrations around the country were noticeably smaller than in previous years or entirely canceled, with six regions (including annexed Crimea) and at least 20 cities halting their commemorations.

In Moscow on Tuesday, the military parade was more downbeat, with no fly-past or “Immortal Regiment” processions — which are usually largescale public events to commemorate those killed in World War II. There were also far fewer troops and military hardware on show than in previous years.

The fact that only one Stalin-era tank was on display in the military parade through Red Square was particularly eye-catching, analysts noted.

“It would be hard to image a more fitting symbol of Russia’s declining military fortunes than the sight of a solitary Stalin-era tank trundling across Red Square during the country’s traditional Victory Day celebrations on May 9,” Peter Dickinson, the editor of the UkraineAlert journal at the Atlantic Council, commented Tuesday.

“For the past two decades, Vladimir Putin has used Victory Day to showcase modern Russia’s resurgence as a military superpower, with dozens of the very latest tanks typically taking part in each annual parade. This year, however, the only tank on display was a T-34 model dating back to World War II.”

Vladimir Putin 5/9/23. A perfect example of “It takes one to know one.” What can one say about a population, Russian, that does the least traditional family production west of China, and has the highest abortion rate in the world at over 50 per 1000 per year.

The Muscowite elites keep insisting on their exceptionalism; they pit people against each other, split societies, provoke bloody conflicts and coups, sow hatred, and aggressive nationalism, destroy traditional family values

This was a different thing. In 2014 Russia pretended that it is not their army who invaded Ukraine and it is an uprising by oppressed locals, who took tanks from monuments.

It wasn’t at all convincing of course, but there are plenty of people who want to be fooled.

That’s nothing. At this point a significant part of their military is made of pedophiles and other trash released from prisons.

Note rhe flags flown on the tanks in both 22 and 23. In 23 it is clearly the old Stalinist hammer and sickle on a red field. While not fully visible, in 22 the flag was clearly red.

Regarding the drone exploding over the Kremlin dome a few days ago, one rumor said it concerned a dispute over which flag to fly over the dome. I imagine younger Russians don’t like the old USSR flag and would be more likely to use the modern drone to try to take it out.

Someone suggested the 2 men on the dome catwalks were official snipers. It is just as likely they were there to change the flag. They were NOT badly hurt by the explosion, and the dome was not structurally damaged. It was a SMALL explosion, probably not from Ukraine or the US.

Was that junk yard in Russia or Ukraine? Putin worried about demonstrators at all the celebrations. The drone attack on the Kremlin (flag?) gave him a good excuse to limit the amount of display and crowds. No wonder he was so jumpy at the recorded opening sounds.

“Nice communist flag on that tank. Telling. How can a supposed American conservative support a country that flies that?”

A few things about Putin’s Soviet Russia:

He was a Communist revanchist long before the war against Ukraine started in 2014...

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/2000/12/05/putin-seeks-restoration-of-soviet-symbols/0f5e2e73-414e-4cd5-8565-465e518081ec/

And now the Red Army flies the flag of the USSR as their battle flag, the Russian Air Force still uses the Red Star, the Soviet National anthem is back, Aeroflot still uses the Communist Party Hammer & Sickle iconography, the hammer and sickle are ever-present on ushanka hats, etc.

In short, the USSR is well and alive but it’s just going by another name. Sort of like how a tranny goes by another name, puts on a dress, and only a fool thinks it made any actual change.

Excellent and funny analogy!
