Putin’s ‘one-tank’ military parade was an embarrassment for Russia, analysts say

Russia’s scaled-down Victory Day military parade showed not only Moscow’s insecurities over possible Ukrainian attacks but also highlighted the country’s depleted military resources due to the conflict, political analysts said.

May 9 is a public holiday in Russia when it commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. It is arguably the most important day in Russia’s public calendar and history, forming a central part of the country’s modern national identity.

This year’s military parade through Red Square in Moscow and celebrations around the country were noticeably smaller than in previous years or entirely canceled, with six regions (including annexed Crimea) and at least 20 cities halting their commemorations.

In Moscow on Tuesday, the military parade was more downbeat, with no fly-past or “Immortal Regiment” processions — which are usually largescale public events to commemorate those killed in World War II. There were also far fewer troops and military hardware on show than in previous years.

The fact that only one Stalin-era tank was on display in the military parade through Red Square was particularly eye-catching, analysts noted.

“It would be hard to image a more fitting symbol of Russia’s declining military fortunes than the sight of a solitary Stalin-era tank trundling across Red Square during the country’s traditional Victory Day celebrations on May 9,” Peter Dickinson, the editor of the UkraineAlert journal at the Atlantic Council, commented Tuesday.

“For the past two decades, Vladimir Putin has used Victory Day to showcase modern Russia’s resurgence as a military superpower, with dozens of the very latest tanks typically taking part in each annual parade. This year, however, the only tank on display was a T-34 model dating back to World War II.”

Still have out your Pom-poms for Ukraine even after it’s exposed as totally a money-laundering scheme. Solid effort propping up this heist where there is no good guy on either side, and Biden and the MIC profit as inflation soars.

Let’s suppose you *could* make an electric (EV) tank work and be combat effective.

What might that imply?

UPSIDE
EVs are virtually ‘silent’ compared to even the turbine of an Abrahms in terms of power plant noise.

EVs have 100% torque available at all RPMs. Improved maneuverability and thus lethality and survivability are likely improved.

The IR signature overall is reduced, since an EV can ‘idle’ without running an external APU or the turbine. Also less heat released during power-on use by far.

Perhaps a better crew-communications environment due to reduced internal noise.

Fewer (?) maintenance issues because there is no transmission, only direct drive.

DOWNSIDES
The *ENTIRE* logistics chain for ‘fuel’ has to change. Instead of tankers with JP-X/ diesel, you’d need a ‘boatload’ of generators and fuel for those generators.

The 69.5+ tons of an M1-A2 will likely only increase. Battery weight per joule is far higher than jet fuel. (I don’t know that number)

Ignite the battery and you’ll have a hull loss, as opposed to replace fuel tanks or power plant and move out.

Time to refuel and range are barriers to overcome. Cruising range of an M1-A2 (not battle maneuvers) is pushing 250+ cruising miles. AFAIK a tank will need approximately 300 gallons every eight hours; this will vary depending on mission, terrain, and weather. A single tank takes roughly 10 minutes to refuel. Refueling and rearming of a tank platoon—four tanks—is approximately 30 minutes under ideal conditions.

How long is a recharge for an EV M1-A2, Bradley or Stryker?

Think about just how much JP-X equivalent power generation capacity you have to have in the AO to deliver equal or better performance.

M1-A2 today (your mileage may vary)
0.6 miles per gallon.
60 gallons per hour when traveling cross-country
30+ gallons per hour while operating at a tactical ideal
10 gallons basic idle.

Retraining an entire Corps. Oof.

Personally, I’d let the SOCOM folks make it work first. I *DO* wonder what was exhibited or discussed behind the curtain at SOF Week in Tampa this week.

What does that have to do with you being a Zelensky shill? Are you profiting from this fiasco?

More like a late 1943 model, its a T34/85.

So 80 years old. This model was made into the early 1950s (IIRC) so the actual tank might be younger.

Why are you covering for China, the actual source of nearly all foreign corruption in the US?

Whacking Ukraine is a proven distraction from the real foreign masters of the US corporate-institutional-political mafia.

And for the massive US domestic corruption, which is on a cosmic scale.

Every country on earth has some degree of payoffs to US politically connected interests, even if it is just kickbacks from US charity, because the US powers that be insist on it. BTW - the US is, by far, the most corrupt country on earth.

It's all about the model...doesn't matter the date of that particular tank, when is was designed.

It's all about the tank that clobbered Germany...

14 min parade which saw the opening note of the music freak out Putin and his entourage, Putin who turned and walked away rapidly before being told it was just music, as his allies milled around in confusion.

There’s no way of knowing if this is real or not.

No there isn’t it - was all photoshopped and craftily edited videos by Ukrainian operatives - the parade was huge with a fleets of T-14 and overflown by dozens SU-57s, while the latest ICBMs were driven along the route.

Putin did not try to run away with the opening music because it a sounded like a gun shot.

They will release the real Victory Parade footage soon.

Oddly other towns and cities had nice parades with T-90s and T-72s

Which would never have happened had the US not given Russia the materials to fight the war.

So you’ve never heard of Kremlinology. As a retired intelligence officer I can tell you that parade composition is indeed used as a data point in intelligence gathering. What equipment is used, how much, who attends, where the bigwigs sit relative to each other, how healthy they look or don’t look, etc. is all analysed and can reveal a lot about what is going on politically and militarily.

We did, along with other countries, supply Russia. The suffered immensely but they did the job.

So here we are now...supplying Ukraine...and supplying Ukraine....and supplying Ukraine.

Funny that the Muscovites still play the old “Hymn to the Soviet Union” to kick off their parades.
